# Sandfields: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? In that case put this page aside for now, leave the ignition and engine off, then ring 0333 366 0103.

Usually, when your motor has not turned, it is emptied and thoroughly rinsed where your vehicle sits in Sandfields.

If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it does not.

## AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

Many current diesels on the roads around Sandfields and Aldershawe carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the engine.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has its own filler.

Plenty of motors have a single flap for the two, whereas others move the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel goes in on every forecourt call-out, again and again.

Much less frequently, the AdBlue side gets filled — mostly from a bottle, by someone working out where it goes.

That gap is where the slip lives.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place around Sandfields

Seldom is it carelessness: normally three things coincide.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a warning from the vehicle, and running dry means limp mode — so a hurried top-up, perhaps before work off Chesterfield Road, perhaps outside Trinity Brew Co. on the way home after work.

New-to-you vehicles come next, too. Rentals, new motors and company vehicles put their fillers differently, and the hand reaches for the cap it used on the old one.

No part halts the tip once it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Whether it happens in Christ Church or the middle of Sandfields, it is the same few seconds.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Before you tip anything, whether on a drive in Pipehill or a forecourt in Sandfields, check these. They take a few seconds.

- Check the cap instead of going by position: AdBlue ones are often blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones normally are not.

- On plenty of vehicles, the size gives it away: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- Look inside the fuel flap: many motors have a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- The handbook says where it lives when the filler is not next to your diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Lichfield City.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around Staffordshire that is.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Burwaye Close.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after you find the AdBlue filler and reading it. Daft, yes, but it does the trick.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the car on.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Only after that, start the car: close the cap, check once more, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Stage five is off limits.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Sandfields?

Short order, then. Top of it: the motor remains off.

Do not switch your ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Do not top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is drawn from.

At a forecourt — Shell, Tesco or any other — the staff will usually help roll the car clear, if you ask.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own drive in Sandfields.

If your engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

On the M6 Toll, under 3 miles from Sandfields, that means the next exit.

About how far did it go? Crossing Sandfields is less a job than a run of under a mile to Lichfield, so tell us.

## When we get there in Sandfields, what takes place?

Outside Anna Seward Primary, close to Erasmus Darwin or on your own drive: wherever the car has stopped, our engineers come to it.

Both the work and the price rest on three replies — what liquid, which quantity, and if it's run — so our engineers ask.

On the phone call itself, you hear the quote — ahead of dispatch.

The system is then flushed thoroughly, once that tank is cleared.

More than with petrol, it counts with AdBlue: crystals form, some metals corrode, and nothing washes out on its own, however long it sits.

The fuel filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

Your engine is started next and tested to be sure it runs smoothly, all before our technicians head off.

With pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs where the motor hasn't run need about half an hour after our technicians arrive.

Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you are given the paperwork your insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

It is worth checking your policy as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover comes with many policies.

## AdBlue drains around Sandfields, and Staffordshire beyond

As a residential suburb, Sandfields shares its vans nearby areas — Leomansley, Lichfield — right through WS postcodes and the surrounding area around them.

A postcode starting WS14 0 gets the van to you fastest.

The vehicle does not need to shift.

Draining happens on the spot, whether a drive, a road near The 'Oss, or a lay-by towards Shortbutts Park.

Guessing doesn't help behind Swans, close to a boundary, or anywhere awkward to pin down; ring and ask.

## For Sandfields drivers, the short version

Pour nothing until you have read the cap.

If AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank all the same, leave it off and phone 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel clears it where it stands, anywhere around Staffordshire.
