# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Sandhaven: Why It Happens and How to Avoid It

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your motor and your ignition off and call 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the motor runs, it is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Sandhaven.

Not happened yet? Further down, the page explains the why it takes place and the ways to avoid it for good.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car

Many modern diesels around Pitblae, as well as Sandhaven, run on two fluids; the engine gets only the diesel.

Your exhaust, not your motor, is where AdBlue ends up: sprayed into the gas to clean it, from its own tank.

Each tank has one filler of its own.

On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

Topping up your diesel side at the petrol pump happens constantly.

Seldom topped up, AdBlue normally comes out of a bottle, poured by someone who must stop and think which cap to use.

It is in the gap that the mistake happens.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs around Sandhaven

It's hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

Hurry comes from the warning. The vehicle warns you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank sends it into limp mode — so the top-up happens quickly, before work on a driveway off Clinton Drive, or on the way home in the car park outside the pub in the village.

Then the car is strange. A hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the tip once it has started.

It takes seconds, be it in Pittulie or right in the heart of Sandhaven.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Be it a Sandhaven forecourt or a drive over in Peathill, spend a few seconds on these before any is poured in.

- Check the cap instead of going by position: AdBlue ones are frequently blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally are not.

- The size. On plenty of vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Many cars say there which fuel goes where.

- Can't find it beside your diesel inlet? Then check below the bonnet or in the boot — the handbook says which.

- The previous driver knows. Check when you pick up a rental or company car — from the nearest station's car park, perhaps — rather than once the warning appears.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

Wherever across Aberdeenshire the light comes on, here is a routine for that day.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with the motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Caird Place.

- Find the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and say the word "AdBlue" out loud as unscrewing it. It sounds daft. It works.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Gently does it, through the bottle's own spout, until it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Only after that, start the car: close the cap, check again, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Spot at step two or three that it has already gone into the diesel side? Then stop right there.

Step five stays off limits.

## Sandhaven: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

The short order of things, starting with no starting your motor.

Do not switch the ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is pulled from — so don't top up with diesel to thin it.

At a forecourt — Asda, Shell or another — the staff will normally help roll the vehicle clear, if you ask.

If you're on your own driveway around Sandhaven, leave it where it stands.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if your motor has already run.

On the M90, over 50 miles from Sandhaven, that means the next exit.

Roughly how far did it go? Hopping across Sandhaven is smaller a job than a run of under 50 miles towards Aberdeen, and so tell us.

## Our arrival around Sandhaven, and what happens next

Our van reaches your car wherever it stopped — your own drive, beside Sandhaven Church, or outside the local primary school.

What liquid was put in, the amount, and if it ran: we ask since the answers set both work and quote.

You get that price on the phone, before anybody sets off.

The fuel system is then purged thoroughly, once the tank is drained.

More than with petrol, it matters with AdBlue: the crystals build up, some metals corrode, and nothing clears away unaided, however long it is left.

Testing comes last: before that, clean diesel is added, and your filter is flushed or replaced as needed.

We don't go until it has been fired up and is running correctly.

Unrun cars usually mean a half-hour visit after the moment we arrive. The kit is safe on a busy filling station, and hushed enough for a residential street after dark.

No money upfront; you settle up that day. At the end, the VAT invoice and the report from the engineer are handed to you for the insurer.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours while we're on the way.

## About Sandhaven, for a moment

Sandhaven is a small coastal village in Aberdeenshire, situated near the towns of Pittulie and Rosehearty. Sandhaven sits at a low elevation of around 14 metres, looking out to the North Sea. Sandhaven is characterised by its semi-detached housing and quiet residential atmosphere, with nearby Broadsea also part of the local community.

## AdBlue drains across Aberdeenshire, Sandhaven included

Being a coastal village, Sandhaven shares its vans surrounding areas — Rosehearty, Broadsea — all the way through AB postcodes and the wider area beyond.

Fastest of all: quote a AB43 7 postcode to our van.

The vehicle does not need to move.

Anywhere it stands — near Castle of Pittulie, on a layby en route to Rosehearty Golf Club, at home — that is where it is drained.

Ring and ask instead of guessing if you are near a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain, like the back of Castle of Pitsligo.

## Sandhaven people: the short version

Before you tip, read the cap.

Petrol in Diesel drains it on the spot, anywhere across Aberdeenshire, if AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank anyway — and so leave the car off and phone 0333 366 0103.
