# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Sandhill? Keep It Switched Off

With AdBlue in the diesel tank, your ignition stays off and so does your engine.

Urea mixed in water is what AdBlue is.

It does not burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the harm it does begins when the system draws it in.

If your motor hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally drained and carefully rinsed where your car stands in Sandhill.

Nothing comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Sandhill: the first few minutes

Do these:

- Pull the keys out, so no one switches your ignition on.

- If you're anywhere near moving traffic, put your hazards on.

- So you can give us which liquid it was and about how much, save the till receipt or the empty bottle.

- Give us a postcode starting S62 5, or whichever street lies closest, and the van reaches you straight — so call wherever you are.

Do not:

- No starting your engine — not briefly, not to shift your vehicle.

- Don't switch your ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- Don't top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel; it separates out.

- Even a short distance along Priestley Avenue is too far to drive the vehicle.

- Draining your tank on your own by the road isn't one to try.

At a forecourt around Sandhill, whether it's the Shell or another one, ask the attendants to help you roll your car away from the pump.

At your own drive, do not move it at all.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

Not the engine but the exhaust is where AdBlue belongs.

Its own reservoir keeps it, and from there it is fed into the exhaust, where it cleans the fumes.

A fuel pump isn't designed to cope with it, and AdBlue was never supposed to travel through one.

Tipped in with your diesel, it stays apart rather than mixing — entirely unlike fuel.

It sinks, since it is heavier than diesel, and settles low where the pickup takes its supply from.

The first thing the fuel system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a car that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Rawmarsh last night, and has not been started since, is still the straightforward case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of the tank, and nothing has pulled it in.

Two kinds of damage follow from there.

What is left when the water goes is urea, which turns into crystals: they lodge in tiny channels and clog filters. Worse, it attacks some metals in the fuel system, and keeps going until it's flushed out.

Pipes holding AdBlue spell damage by morning for a vehicle parked in Sandhill. Just inside your tank, it stays stable.

The water in it causes damage of its own: your high-pressure pump and your injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel often the bigger problem?

Petrol put into a diesel on another forecourt nearby's forecourt leaves the fuel watery — that's the whole issue.

No damage is done while it stays put, blended into the diesel — only once the motor runs on it.

The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a totally unsuitable substance.

It cannot simply be run through, because it does not burn.

It does not stay mixed, so it cannot be weakened. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the motor "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether the vehicle is in Abdy or the middle of Sandhill.

With AdBlue, the good news is no different from petrol.

Emptying a tank is the easiest part on a fuel system, and without running, the AdBlue remains in there — anywhere in South Yorkshire your vehicle has stopped.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Sandhill: how it ends up there

After dark, two caps side by side — the AdBlue cap and the diesel one, occasionally behind one flap — may look the same. No one intends it; many designs allow it.

Usually it's not the forecourt: someone picks up a bottle heading home and pours it in at home.

It tends to occur in a couple of familiar ways.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up occurs in a hurry outside Rawmarsh Sandhill Primary School.

Near Dickens Road, a driver pours a container in on the drive after work.

Or a driver unfamiliar with that flap refills the car in dim light, stopped in the car park by The Queens.

It occurs most in the motors drivers know least: a hire car, a new car, a company car, or the second vehicle of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

Anywhere in South Yorkshire, Sandhill included, the slip does not change, and neither does the first response: leave it switched off.

## Sandhill: started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank?

The AdBlue has left the tank, then.

It's been drawn through the fuel filter and the lines, and if the engine ran for any time, it has got to the high-pressure pump and your injectors.

You may see the motor running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, possibly on the way back from Sandhill Park or halfway across Sandhill.

Pull over when safe. Switch off. Keep the vehicle off instead of testing it again.

Every start pulls more of it through.

Leave the M18, under 5 miles from Sandhill, by the first junction and park somewhere safe, not carrying on.

Distance matters: each mile carries the AdBlue deeper in, and so heading for Sheffield, under 10 miles away, makes a far larger job than crossing Sandhill to the car park by Apollo Street Neighbourhood Centre.

Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

There's more to rinse out once the motor has been run, and our engineers do all of it where the vehicle has ended up.

Caught early, it very rarely leaves lasting damage.

## Clearing AdBlue in a diesel around Sandhill: what it takes

Our engineers come to the vehicle, wherever it has stopped around Sandhill: a side street close to St Nicolas, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

Before anything else we ask what got in, about how much, and whether the engine has been run, because those answers settle the work.

Next, emptying that tank right there takes out the polluted diesel along with the AdBlue in one go.

A full flush counts far more with AdBlue than with petrol, since residue will not wash out on its own.

After that, the filter: cleaned, or replaced if it must be. Then clean diesel, and then a check of your vehicle.

About half an hour on site is usual for most jobs where your engine has not run.

The pumping gear is explosion-proof, so a busy filling station is no problem, and it is hushed enough for a residential street after dark.

Finally, the fuel system is primed with fresh diesel.

Firing it up comes next, and then you set off from where the vehicle is parked, by Swinton (South Yorks) or on a driveway in Sandhill.

Our engineers make sure it runs smoothly on fresh diesel before we go.

Our engineers do it all wherever the vehicle has ended up, and it never has to go to a workshop.

You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report later, which is what insurers ask for.

## About Sandhill and where it is

Sandhill is a suburban area located on the riverside in South Yorkshire, with an elevation of 59 metres and situated approximately 8.3 miles from Sheffield. Sandhill sits near several nearby places, including Ryecroft, Piccadilly, and Kilnhurst, and is characterized by its predominant semi-detached housing. Sandhill is part of the larger Sheffield urban area, with the city centre being a short distance away. Sandhill is also relatively close to the national motorway network, with London being around 144.5 miles to the south.

## AdBlue drains across South Yorkshire, Sandhill included

AdBlue call-outs around Sandhill are passed to vans that serve the towns around it — Ryecroft, Piccadilly plus Kilnhurst — and most of South Yorkshire beyond, across S postcodes.

If you are near a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain, ring and ask instead of guessing.

No moving is needed. In Sandhill, a residential suburb, a mobile service fits: the car is emptied on the spot, be it in a drive, a side street, a parking area or a forecourt.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Sandhill

Not one flat figure would be honest, since every job is different.

Three things change the price: whether the motor has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue got in, and where the vehicle is. That last one rests on whether a technician can reach it safely, and an open driveway is easier than a tight gap behind Rosehill Park Leaf Sculpture.

Before any quote, not afterwards, every call from Sandhill opens with the same three questions: the liquid, the quantity, plus if it ran.

Their replies shrink the range down to one figure.

You hear that price on the phone, before anybody heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

Misfuelling cover comes with many insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van arrives.

## In Sandhill and still alongside your car?

Then, do nothing — that's the most helpful step there is.

Motor off, keys out, ignition off.

Ring 0333 366 0103 then tell us it's AdBlue, about how much, and whether it has run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, in Sandhill or anywhere across South Yorkshire.
