# Saxton: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

If AdBlue has got into the diesel tank, leave the engine off then leave your ignition off.

Water with urea mixed in it: that's AdBlue.

Not like fuel, it neither burns nor mixes, and no harm happens till the engine pulls it through.

Caught before the motor has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Saxton.

Before you do anything else, phone 0333 366 0103.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Saxton: the first few minutes

To do:

- Pocket the keys, and that prevents anyone switching the power on.

- Put the hazard lights on if you're at all close to moving traffic.

- Keep the till receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what went in and about how much.

- Our van finds you quickest with a postcode starting LS24 9, or just the name of a street close by, and so call from the spot.

Not to do:

- No starting the motor — not for a second, not to reposition the vehicle.

- The ignition stays off: on many diesels, turning it on is enough to start your fuel pump.

- No more fuel on top. The AdBlue won't mix, so it's wasted.

- Never drive the car anywhere, not even a short way along Main Street.

- By the road, don't attempt draining it on your own.

Moving your car off the island is a job for staff to help with, whichever Saxton forecourt you are on, the Sunset Garage or any other.

Parked on your own drive? Then it remains just where it is.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

Not the engine but your exhaust is where AdBlue belongs.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to clean it.

Nothing in it is meant to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is made to handle it.

Inside a diesel tank it acts very differently from fuel. It does not mix in.

Heavier than diesel, it drops and collects below it — the same spot the intake sucks from.

When the system runs, the AdBlue is top of the list to be pulled through. Before then it sits beneath your diesel, and that is why a car filled in Towton last night and never switched on remains the straightforward one, provided nobody touches the key.

It causes two kinds of damage from there.

It attacks certain metals found in fuel components, working on whatever it reaches until it's removed completely. And when the water goes, the urea turns into crystals that clog filters and lodge in narrow passages.

By daybreak, a vehicle parked around Saxton with AdBlue in its lines gets worse; where it is only inside your tank, it doesn't.

Diesel protects the injection pump and every injector as it flows; water gives no lubrication, and that is a second kind of harm.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel commonly the bigger fault?

Petrol put into a diesel on BP's forecourt leaves the fuel watery — that's the main problem.

No harm is done as long as it stays unused, mixed into the diesel — only when the engine runs on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different matter: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all.

Not burning, it cannot simply be run through.

It does not stay mixed, so it can't be diluted. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the engine "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether the car is in Sherburn in Elmet or the middle of Saxton.

The same good news holds as with petrol.

Emptying a tank is the easiest job on a fuel system, and with no running, the AdBlue stays in it — wherever in North Yorkshire the car has stopped.

## Saxton: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

It is not deliberate. Many cars keep the AdBlue cap beside the diesel inlet, occasionally under one flap, and mixing them up is simple after dark.

Usually it is never the forecourt: a driver picks up a bottle heading home and tips it in outside the house.

The ways it happens are few and familiar.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up takes place in a hurry outside Saxton Church of England Primary School.

Close to Dam Lane, someone tips a container in on that drive in the evening.

Or a driver unfamiliar with that flap refills the vehicle in dim light, stopped in the car park outside The Greyhound.

Rented motors, new motors, fleet cars, or the spare vehicle in a family with both fuels: the least known vehicles get it most.

Anywhere across North Yorkshire, Saxton as well, the mistake doesn't change, and nor does the first response: keep it switched off.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Saxton, and the motor started?

Then the AdBlue has left your tank.

It has been pulled through the fuel filter and the fuel lines, and if the engine ran for any time, it has got to your high-pressure pump and the injectors.

Maybe returning from Dinting Dale Plantation, or midway across Saxton, your engine might run lumpy, smoke, lose power, flash your dash or cut out.

Pull over when safe. Turn off. Keep the car off rather than restarting it to check.

More of that is pulled through with each start.

Saxton lies under 3 miles from the Aberford By-Pass; if you were on it, exit at the next junction and pull up safely instead of carrying on.

Each mile carries the AdBlue deeper in. That is why a hop across Saxton to park near All Saints and a drive of under 15 miles towards Leeds are such separate jobs.

Tell us roughly how far it had come.

There's more to rinse out once the engine has been started, and our technicians do all of it where your car has ended up.

When it's caught soon, lasting damage is very rare.

## Emptying AdBlue in a diesel in Saxton: what it takes

We come to your car, wherever it has stopped around Saxton: a side street near Saxton Village Hall, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

The work rests on three answers, which we ask for first — which fluid was put in, the amount, and if the motor has run.

Then your tank is drained where the vehicle sits, so the tainted fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

What remains from AdBlue will not wash away unaided, and so the fuel system gets a full flush, which matters much more here than for petrol.

Next, the filter: flushed, or replaced if it must be. Then clean diesel, then a test of the vehicle.

Roughly half an hour on site is usual for most jobs where your engine has not run.

Low-noise enough to use outside a house at night, and fine on a busy forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

New diesel goes in to bleed the fuel system, and that is the final step.

Whether it is a parking space by Church Fenton or a driveway in Saxton, that is where we start the engine and you drive off.

Our engineers make sure it runs correctly on fresh diesel before leaving.

No workshop is required at any point, with the whole job done on the spot.

Your insurer will want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — each handed over afterwards.

## About Saxton, for a moment

Saxton is a small village in North Yorkshire, situated inland at an elevation of 29 metres, approximately 11 miles from Leeds. Saxton has a population of around 566 people and is characterised by predominantly detached housing. Saxton is located near other local places such as Scarthingwell, Barkston Ash, and Lotherton, and is about 167 miles north of London.

## AdBlue drains across North Yorkshire, Saxton included

Scarthingwell, Barkston Ash and Lotherton are among the towns near Saxton that the same vans serve, along with most of North Yorkshire further out, over the LS postcode area.

Ring and check instead of guessing if you are close to a county line, or anywhere awkward to pin down.

No towing is needed. In Saxton, a rural village, a mobile service fits: your car is drained where it stands, be it on a drive, a side street, a car park or a forecourt.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Saxton: the cost of fixing it

Every job is different, and so no single quote would be fair.

What changes the cost is, first of all, whether your engine has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue got in; and finally where your car is and whether our van can reach it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight spot behind St. Mary's Chapel.

Before any figure, not afterwards, every call from Saxton opens with the same three checks: the fuel, the amount, and if it ran.

With them, a range narrows to a single fixed number.

Priced by phone before the van sets out, the job is settled on the day — card or phone, no deposit.

Look at your insurance while we are on the way: many carry misfuelling cover.

## Saxton: still alongside the car?

Then the most useful thing you can do is nothing to your car.

Keys out; engine and ignition off.

Ring 0333 366 0103 and tell us it's AdBlue, about how much, and if it has run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, in Saxton or anywhere around North Yorkshire.
