# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Scissett: Why It Occurs

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? Then set this page aside for now, keep the ignition and motor off, then ring 0333 366 0103.

Normally, if the motor hasn't turned, it's emptied and fully purged where your vehicle is in Scissett.

Here before the event? Then what follows explains why it happens and what to stop it ever happening.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank

Many modern diesels on the roads around Scissett and Skelmanthorpe carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the motor.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Different tanks, separate fillers.

Many of vehicles share a single flap for the two, while some move the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

At the petrol pump, your diesel side is topped up all the time.

Someone who has to stop and think where it goes normally fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less frequently.

Mistakes happen in that gap between the two.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Scissett: how it occurs

Rarely is it carelessness: normally three things line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out completely, the vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Wakefield Road before work, or in the car park at The Crown on the way home.

New-to-you motors come second, as well. Rentals, new motors and company motors place their fillers in new places, and habit reaches for the cap used on the old one.

Lastly, the bottle goes in: a diesel filler or AdBlue one, it slides in as readily, and once the tip starts, no part halts it.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Scissett or out in Hill Top.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so check them before you pour anything, on a drive in High Hoyland or a forecourt around Scissett.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally is not. Read it rather than going by where it sits.

- The size. On many motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- A label inside your fuel flap frequently shows which fuel goes where, on plenty of motors. Check for it.

- The handbook says where it lives if the filler isn't next to the diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- Collecting a hire or company car, say at the car park at Denby Dale? Check with whoever drove the car last before leaving, rather than once the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

For the day the light appears — anywhere you are across West Yorkshire — a routine to follow.

- Switch off once parked — flat ground, motor stopped, and never in a rush by Marshall Mill Court at the roadside.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it does the trick.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Shut the cap, and look again — confirm the diesel filler stayed closed the whole time. After that, start the vehicle.

Discover at the second or third stage that the bottle went into the diesel filler? That is where you stop.

Leave out stage five altogether.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Scissett?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start your motor.

On many diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so don't switch the vehicle on.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is sucked from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.

The attendants at Shell, Star Garage or any forecourt will usually lend a hand pushing your car away if asked.

Your own driveway around Scissett is where it should stay.

If your engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

On the M1, under 5 miles from Scissett, that means the next exit.

A short hop across Scissett is a smaller job than a run towards Wakefield, under 10 miles away, so tell us about how far it went.

## Scissett: what happens when our technicians arrive

By Scissett Church of England Academy, close to St Augustine or on your own drive: wherever the vehicle has stopped, our engineers come to it.

What fluid got in, the amount, and if it ran: we ask since the answers decide both work and price.

The price is given on the call, before any van leaves.

After that: a drain, then a thorough flush of the entire system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own — which is why that counts more with AdBlue than with petrol.

A test comes at the end: before that, clean diesel goes in, and the fuel filter is flushed or changed as needed.

Before we go, we start the engine and check that it is running correctly.

Using pumps fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs in which your engine hasn't run need roughly half an hour once we arrive.

Nothing upfront; you settle up on the day. Afterwards, a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer go to you for the insurer.

It's worth looking at your policy as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover is included with many policies.
