# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Scotton: Why It Happens

Stop here for a moment when the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, then phone 0333 366 0103.

Usually, when the engine hasn't run, it is emptied and thoroughly flushed where the car sits in Scotton.

Nothing happened yet? Further down, the rest of the page covers the reasons it occurs and the ways to prevent it for good.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

Diesel goes to your motor — but plenty of modern diesels driven about Scotton and Hipswell hold another fluid as well.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into your exhaust stream and cleans it.

Each tank has its own filler.

On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

Filling your diesel side at the pump happens constantly.

Rarely filled, AdBlue normally comes out of a bottle, poured by a driver who must stop and think what filler to use.

It is in that gap that the mistake lives.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place in Scotton

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

Haste comes from the warning. The car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank puts it into limp mode — so the top-up gets done quickly, before work on a driveway off Kestrel Drive, or on the way home in the car park outside the pub in the village.

The old car's filler is where the hand reaches — but a hire car, a new car or a company car keeps the fillers somewhere else. That's a second factor: an unfamiliar motor.

Nothing halts the tip after it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

It's seconds, whether in Catterick Garrison or right in the centre of Scotton.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so check them before you tip anything, on a drive in East Hauxwell or a forecourt around Scotton.

- Position can mislead; the cap does not. AdBlue caps tend to be blue or bear the word "AdBlue" — diesel ones normally do not.

- On plenty of vehicles, the size tells: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- Check inside your fuel flap: plenty of cars have a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- Can't see it next to the diesel filler? In that case check below the bonnet or in the boot — the handbook says which.

- Collecting a hire or company car, say at the car park outside Northallerton? Check with whoever drove the vehicle last before leaving, rather than when the light goes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in North Yorkshire that is.

- Turn off once parked — flat ground, engine off, and not rushed beside Woodcock Drive at the roadside.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after you find the AdBlue filler and read it. Silly, yes, yet it does the trick.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the vehicle on.

- Stop when your tank fills or the bottle is empty; until then, tip slowly using its built-in spout.

- Close the cap and check again. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Leave out stage five entirely.

## Scotton: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start the engine.

Keep your ignition off as well, because on many diesels switching it on alone runs your fuel pump.

Filling up with diesel won't dilute it: rather than mixing, AdBlue drops to the base of the tank, right where fuel is taken from.

Ask the staff to help push your car away from the pump if you are on a forecourt — the Tesco, the JET or somewhere else.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own drive in Scotton.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if your motor has already run.

Scotton lies under 3 miles from the Catterick Bypass; there, take the next junction.

Distance matters — a quick hop across Scotton makes a smaller job than driving under 25 miles to Ripon — so say roughly how far it went.

## Scotton: what occurs when our engineers turn up

Our van comes to the car anywhere it has come to rest — your own drive, near 19th Platoon 4th Section, or outside Catterick Garrison, Le Cateau Community Primary School.

Those answers determine this work and the price, and so we ask what went in, about how much, and whether it has run.

You hear that quote on the phone, before anyone sets off.

The system is then flushed thoroughly, after the tank is drained.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why that matters more with AdBlue than with petrol.

Filter flushed or, where it must be, swapped; clean diesel in; and then a check of your car.

The motor is fired up next and checked to make sure it runs smoothly, all before our technicians leave.

Unrun vehicles usually mean a half-hour visit after the moment we arrive. The kit is fine on a busy filling station, and hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

Nothing upfront; you settle up on the day. Afterwards, the VAT invoice and the report from the engineer are handed to you for the insurer.

Wrong-fuel cover is included in many insurance policies — so make use of the wait to look at yours.

## AdBlue drains across North Yorkshire, Scotton included

Arrathorne and Tunstall are among the towns near Scotton, a residential suburb, that the same vans cover, throughout DL postcodes.

Quickest of all: give a DL9 3 postcode to our van.

No need to move the car.

A drive, a lay-by on the way to Bushby Gill Plantation, a side street close to Catterick Military Court Centre: our technicians drain the car where it stands.

If you're near a border, or somewhere hard to describe like the back of Savoy Catterick Garrison, ring and ask instead of assuming.

## In short, for Scotton motorists

Read the cap before you pour.

Petrol in Diesel drains it where it stands, anywhere across North Yorkshire, if AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank regardless — so leave the car off then ring 0333 366 0103.
