# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Seafar: Why It Occurs

Keep your engine and ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103 first — the rest can wait when AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

Caught before the motor runs, it's normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Seafar.

The remainder of this page explains why it occurs and how to ensure it does not — handy if you're reading before it has happened.

## AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

Plenty of modern diesels in Greenfaulds, as well as Seafar, run on two fluids; the engine gets just your diesel.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust stream and cleans it.

Each tank comes with a filler of its own.

On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel goes in on each forecourt call-out, again and again.

A driver who has to stop and think where it goes usually fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less commonly.

That gap is where the slip lives.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Seafar: how it occurs

Carelessness rarely explains it. Instead is three things lining up at once.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a warning from your car, and letting it run out means limp mode — so a hurried top-up, maybe before work off Hill Road, perhaps outside The Royal British Legion on the way home after work.

Unfamiliar vehicles are second, too. Rentals, new motors and company motors put their fillers in new places, and the hand reaches for the cap used on the old one.

Lastly, the spout goes in: a diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it goes in just as easily, and after the tip starts, nothing halts it.

It's a few seconds, be it in Cumbernauld or right in the heart of Seafar.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Before you pour anything, whether on a drive in Carrickstone or a forecourt in Seafar, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Read the cap rather than going by position: AdBlue caps are commonly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones usually are not.

- Many cars fit AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- Lift the flap and check for a label — many cars mark which belongs in which filler just there.

- Cannot see it beside your diesel inlet? In that case look below the bonnet or inside your boot — the handbook will say where.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Cumbernauld.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in North Lanarkshire that is.

- Stop somewhere level, motor off, with time to spare — never hurried on the side of Seafar Road.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it does the trick.

- The diesel cap stays on. Where both sit under a flap, make sure it is closed before the bottle comes up.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Only after that, start the car: close the cap, check once more, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Discover during the second or third step that the bottle went in the wrong tank? That's where you stop.

Don't go on to step five.

## Seafar: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start your engine.

Leave the ignition off too, because on plenty of diesels switching it on by itself runs the pump.

Topping up with diesel won't weaken it: instead, AdBlue drops to the base of the tank, just where the fuel is taken from.

Ask the attendants to help roll the car clear of the pump if you're at a forecourt — the Tesco, the Asda or anywhere else.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own driveway around Seafar.

When the engine has been run already, pull over somewhere safe and switch the vehicle off.

The next junction is the place to leave if you are on the M80, under a mile from Seafar.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Glasgow, under 15 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Seafar.

## Seafar: what takes place when our engineers get there

Outside the local primary school, near St Mungo's Parish Church or on your own driveway: wherever your car has stopped, our engineers come to it.

The replies settle the work and the price, and so our engineers ask what was put in, about how much, and whether it has run.

That quote comes over the phone, ahead of any van leaving.

Then the tank is cleared and the fuel system cleaned thoroughly.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and eats at certain fuel-system metals, and none of that washes away by itself. Hence it matters more.

The filter cleaned or, where it must be, swapped; fresh diesel in; and then a test of the car.

We do not go until it has been started and is running smoothly.

With pumps fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs where your engine has not run need roughly half an hour after our engineers arrive.

Paying is on the day, not upfront, and you receive the documents your insurer wants: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours while we are on the way.

## AdBlue drains around Seafar, and North Lanarkshire beyond

Seafar is a residential suburb, and the teams that cover it also work the places near it, Carbrain and Balloch among them, across the G postcode area.

Give a postcode that starts G67 1, and the van gets there fastest.

The vehicle doesn't need to move.

Wherever it stands — beside Kingdom Hall of Jehovahs Witnesses, on a layby heading to Ravenswood Playing Fields, at home — that's where it gets cleared.

Ring and ask instead of assuming if you're close to a border, or somewhere hard to explain, like the back of Son of the Angel.

## In short, for Seafar motorists

Always, the cap; then, the pour.

Petrol in Diesel drains it on the spot, anywhere around North Lanarkshire, if AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank anyway — so leave the vehicle off then call 0333 366 0103.
