# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Seafield: How It Happens and How to Prevent It

Leave your engine and ignition off and call 0333 366 0103 first — reading can wait if AdBlue is already in your diesel tank.

Caught before your engine runs, it's usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Seafield.

Not happened yet? Further down, the page explains the reasons it takes place and the ways to avoid it for good.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

No single liquid but two: that's what many modern diesels around Seafield and Forton run, with diesel feeding the engine.

Your exhaust, not the engine, is where AdBlue ends up: sprayed into the fumes to fresh it, from its own tank.

There is a filler on every tank.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

At the pump, your diesel side gets filled constantly.

Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes normally fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less regularly.

That gap is where the slip lives.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Seafield: how it happens

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

Haste follows from the warning. The vehicle tells you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank sends it into limp mode — so the top-up gets done in a rush, before work on a drive off Mariners Way, or on the way home in the car park outside Stoke Snooker Club.

New-to-you motors are next, too. Hire cars, new motors and company cars put their fillers in new places, and the hand reaches for the cap used on the old one.

Lastly, the spout fits: diesel filler or AdBlue one, it goes in as easily, and after the tip starts, nothing stops it.

Whether it occurs in Newtown or the middle of Seafield, it is the same few seconds.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Whether a Seafield forecourt or a driveway out in Camdentown, take a couple of seconds on these before any is poured in.

- Read the cap instead of going by position: AdBlue ones are regularly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones usually aren't.

- On plenty of motors, size gives it away: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- Open the flap and check for a label — plenty of motors show what goes in which filler just there.

- The handbook says where it is when the filler isn't next to your diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- Picking up a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park outside Portsmouth Harbour? Check with the person who drove it last before leaving, rather than once the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

Anywhere across Hampshire the light comes on, this is a routine for the day.

- Not in a rush on the side of Old Road, not on a slope, not with the motor running: park and switch off first.

- Silly as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew the cap works — once you have located your filler and read it.

- Both behind one flap? So confirm the cap on your diesel filler stays closed ahead of lifting the bottle.

- Stop when that tank is topped up or the bottle is empty; until then, tip slowly through its built-in spout.

- Close the cap, and look again — making sure the diesel cap remained closed throughout. After that, start the car.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Skip step five entirely.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, in Seafield?

What follows is a short order of things, starting with not starting your engine.

Leave your ignition off as well, since on many diesels switching it on by itself runs your fuel pump.

Thinning it with more diesel fails, because AdBlue sinks to the bottom rather than blending — and that is where the fuel is drawn from.

At a forecourt — Shell, another forecourt nearby or another — the staff will usually help roll the vehicle away, when you ask.

On your own drive around Seafield? Then the vehicle remains where it is.

If the engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

The next exit means the place to come off when you are on the M275, under 3 miles from Seafield.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Portsmouth, under 3 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Seafield.

## When we arrive around Seafield, what occurs?

The van comes to your car wherever it has come to rest — your own drive, beside Coastal Forces, or by Haselworth Primary School.

Both the work and the quote rest on three replies — what fluid, what quantity, and whether it's run — so we ask.

The quote is given over the phone, before any van leaves.

Draining the tank comes next, then a full flush of the fuel system.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own.

The filter flushed or, where it must be, replaced; fresh diesel in; and then a check of the car.

Then our engineers fire it up and check it runs correctly before we go.

Unstarted vehicles usually need a half-hour job after the moment we arrive. The kit is fine on a busy filling station, and quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Wrong-fuel cover is included in plenty of insurance policies — and so use the wait to look at yours.

## About Seafield itself

Seafield is a coastal suburban area in Hampshire, situated near the city of Portsmouth and close to the neighbouring areas of Newtown and Gosport. Seafield sits at a low elevation of around 4 metres, reflecting its proximity to the sea. Seafield is characterized by a high proportion of flat dwellings, which are typical of many coastal urban areas in southern England.

## AdBlue drains about Seafield, and Hampshire beyond

As a residential suburb, Seafield shares its vans nearby areas — Gosport, Clayhall — all the way through PO postcodes and the surrounding area around them.

Give a postcode beginning PO12 1, and the van arrives fastest.

No need to shift the car.

Our technicians drain it where it is — a side street close to compass sculpture, a lay-by on the way to Walpole Park, a driveway.

Ring and ask rather than guessing if you are near a border, or somewhere hard to explain, like the back of Royal Navy Submarine Museum.

## The short version for Seafield motorists

Tip nothing until you've read the cap.

Still AdBlue in your diesel tank? Petrol in Diesel can drain it where it stands, anywhere across Hampshire: switch the car off then ring 0333 366 0103.
