# Seamer: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

Stop here for a moment when the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, then call 0333 366 0103.

Around Seamer, finding it before your motor runs usually leaves draining and a thorough flush where it stands.

The remainder of this page covers why it occurs and how to ensure it does not — handy if you're reading before it has happened.

## AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

Many newer diesels on the roads round Seamer and East Ayton carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the engine.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank comes with a filler of its own.

On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

At the petrol pump, your diesel side is topped up all the time.

A driver who has to stop and work out where it goes normally tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less commonly.

It is in the gap that the error happens.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place around Seamer

Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things line up.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a warning from the vehicle, and running out leads to limp mode — hence a hurried top-up, perhaps before work off White Horse Lane, perhaps outside Copper Horse on the way home after work.

Then, the hand goes for the cap it would have used on the old vehicle — since a rental car, a new car or a company car places the fillers somewhere your last one didn't.

A spouted bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, after started, keeps on.

It takes a few seconds, be it in Irton or right in the centre of Seamer.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Look at these before pouring, on a forecourt in Seamer or a drive over in West Ayton. A few seconds, that's all.

- Check the cap instead of going by position: AdBlue caps are commonly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones usually are not.

- The size. On plenty of motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Look inside your fuel flap: many motors carry a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- Can't see it beside your diesel inlet? Then check below the bonnet or in your boot — the owner's manual says which.

- Whoever had it before knows. Check when you pick up a hire car or company car — at the nearest station's car park, perhaps — rather than when the warning appears.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

When the light goes on, anywhere around North Yorkshire, use this routine.

- Switch off after you park — level ground, motor off, and never rushed beside The Green on the verge.

- Silly as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew the cap does the trick — after you have found your filler and read it.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the car on.

- Stop when that tank is topped up or the bottle runs dry; until then, tip slowly using its built-in spout.

- Before you start your car, close the cap and look a second time that the diesel cap was never opened off.

Discover at the second or third step that the bottle went in the wrong tank? That is where you stop.

Don't go on to step five.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Seamer already?

Do not start your motor: that is how the short order of things starts.

The fuel pump starts on many diesels the moment your ignition is switched on — and so leave it off.

Diluting it with extra diesel fails, since AdBlue settles to the bottom rather than mixing — and that's where the fuel is drawn from.

Ask the attendants to help push your car away from the petrol pump if you're at a forecourt — the Morrisons, the Esso or somewhere else.

Your own drive in Seamer is the place it should stay.

Where your motor has been run already, stop somewhere safe then turn the car off.

On the Petuaria Way, under 50 miles from Seamer, that means the next junction.

Mileage counts — a short hop across Seamer is a smaller job than heading under 50 miles towards York — so say about how far it went.

## Seamer: what occurs when our engineers get there

By Seamer and Irton Community Primary School, close to Seamer Memorial Hall or on your own driveway: wherever the vehicle has stopped, our engineers come to it.

The replies determine the work and the quote, and so our technicians ask what went in, roughly how much, and whether it's run.

No one heads out before you have had the quote over the phone.

Your system is then cleaned thoroughly, once your tank is cleared.

More than with petrol, it counts with AdBlue: crystals build up, certain metals corrode, and none of that clears away on its own, no matter how long it sits.

Filter flushed or, if needed, replaced; fresh diesel in; and then a check of the car.

The engine is started next and checked to be sure it runs correctly, all before our engineers head off.

Using pumps safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which your engine hasn't run take roughly half an hour after our technicians are there.

Nothing in advance; you settle up that day. Afterwards, the VAT invoice and a report from the engineer go to you for the insurer.

It's worth checking your policy while we travel to you: misfuelling cover comes with plenty of policies.

## About Seamer itself

Seamer is a coastal village in North Yorkshire, situated near the seaside resorts of the North East coast. Seamer lies at an elevation of 33 metres, close to the neighbouring villages of Irton and Crossgates. Seamer has a mix of housing types, with semi-detached homes being particularly prevalent, and is located approximately 32 miles from the city of York. Seamer is also within commuting distance of larger cities, with London being around 190 miles to the south.

## AdBlue drains in Seamer and across North Yorkshire

As a coastal village, Seamer has the same vans as surrounding areas — Crossgates, Eastfield — all the way through YO postcodes and the surrounding area beyond.

The van reaches you fastest with a postcode starting YO12 4.

There's no need to shift the vehicle.

Our engineers drain it where it is — a side street near St Martins, a lay-by on the way to Seamer Sports Association, a driveway.

Assuming doesn't help at the back of Seamer Methodist Church, on a border, or somewhere awkward to describe; ring and ask.

## For Seamer motorists, the short version

Pour no AdBlue till you have read the cap.

AdBlue in the diesel tank regardless? Leave it switched off then phone 0333 366 0103; Petrol in Diesel empties it on the spot, across North Yorkshire.
