# Seed Lee: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the engine and the ignition off then call 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a full flush, carried out right where the car stands in Seed Lee, is usually all it needs if found before the motor runs.

Not happened yet? Further down, the rest of the page explains the why it occurs and the how to prevent it altogether.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Not one fluid but two: that's how many newer diesels around Seed Lee and Brindle carry, with diesel for the motor.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has its own filler.

Some cars put the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; plenty of others have both together behind one flap.

Filling the diesel side at the pump goes on constantly.

Seldom filled, AdBlue usually goes in from a bottle, tipped by a driver who must stop and think which filler to use.

It's in the gap that the error happens.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank occur around Seed Lee?

It is seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it runs out completely, the car drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Carr Barn Brow before work, or in the car park outside Hospital Inn on the way home.

The old car's filler is where the hand goes — but a hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers somewhere else. That's a second factor: a new motor.

Nothing stops the tip once it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Clayton Brook or the heart of Seed Lee: it is the same few seconds either way.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Before you tip anything, whether on a drive in Walton Summit or a forecourt in Seed Lee, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Check the cap instead of going by position: AdBlue ones are frequently blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally aren't.

- Look at the size: the smaller neck is, on many vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Plenty of cars say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If your filler isn't by the diesel cap, it's in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Collecting a hire or company car, say at the car park outside Bamber Bridge? Ask the person who drove the car last before leaving, not once the light goes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

For the day the warning appears — wherever you are around Lancashire — a routine to follow.

- Pull in on level, engine off, with time to spare — never rushing on the side of Elmfield Drive.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew it. It sounds silly. It does the trick.

- The diesel cap remains on. Where both sit under a flap, confirm it's shut before lifting the bottle.

- Gently is best, through the bottle's own spout, until it is full or the bottle runs out.

- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.

Find at the second or third step that AdBlue went in the diesel tank? That is where you stop.

Stage five is out.

## Seed Lee: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

What follows is a short order of things, starting with not starting the motor.

The fuel pump starts on many diesels the moment your ignition goes on — and so keep it off.

Do not top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is drawn from.

The attendants at Esso, Asda or another forecourt will usually lend a hand pushing the vehicle clear when you ask.

If you are on your own driveway around Seed Lee, leave the car where it sits.

When your engine has been run by now, stop somewhere safe and turn the vehicle off.

Leave the M61 — under a mile out of Seed Lee — at the first junction.

About how far did it go? Hopping across Seed Lee is smaller work than a run of under 5 miles to Preston, and so say.

## What takes place when our engineers arrive in Seed Lee

Wherever the vehicle came to rest, be it outside Clayton Brook Primary School, beside Clayton Brook Community Church or on your own drive, the van comes to it.

Both the work and the price depend on three replies — what liquid, which quantity, and whether it's run — so we ask.

You hear that quote by phone, before anyone heads out.

Emptying the tank comes next, then a full flush of your system.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own.

The filter flushed or, if needed, replaced; clean diesel in; then a test of your car.

We do not leave until it has been started and is running smoothly.

Using pumps fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs in which the engine hasn't run need roughly half an hour after our technicians arrive.

Your insurer usually wants an engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and you get both once the job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no deposit.

While we travel, take a look at your policy; plenty carry cover for misfuelling.

A drive, a lay-by on the way to Haddock Park Wood, a side street close to Clayton Brook Community Centre: our technicians drain the car where it sits.

Awkward to explain, like the back of Clayton Green Library? By a county line? Asking is better than guessing, so ring.

## In short, for Seed Lee motorists

Tip no AdBlue till you've read the cap.

If AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank regardless, leave it off and call 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel drains it where it waits, anywhere in Lancashire.
