# Seedfield: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

Stop here for a moment if the diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

A drain plus a full flush, carried out just where your vehicle sits in Seedfield, is normally all it needs when found before the engine runs.

If you're reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it does not.

## AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

Many modern diesels in Fernhill, like those in Seedfield, run on two fluids; your engine gets just your diesel.

The exhaust, not the engine, is where AdBlue ends up: sprayed into the fumes to fresh it, from a separate tank.

Different tanks, different fillers.

Plenty of cars have a single flap for both, while some move the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is topped up at the petrol pump all the time.

A driver who has to stop and work out where it goes normally fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less commonly.

Mistakes happen in the gap between the two.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Seedfield: how it takes place

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

Haste comes from the warning. The vehicle tells you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up gets done in a rush, before work on a driveway off Parkinson Street, or on the way home in the car park outside Sundial.

The old car's cap is where the hand reaches — but a hire car, a new motor or a company car keeps the fillers somewhere else. That's the second factor: an unfamiliar motor.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the pour after it has started.

Whether it occurs in Higher Woodhill or the middle of Seedfield, it is the same few seconds.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

A couple of seconds is all these take — so check them before you tip anything, on a driveway in Burrs or a forecourt around Seedfield.

- Read the cap instead of going by position: AdBlue caps are commonly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps usually aren't.

- The size. On plenty of cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Open the filler flap and look for a label — plenty of motors mark which goes in which inlet just there.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that's where the filler sits if it is not by your diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- The person who drove it last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park outside Bromley Cross, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

When the light comes on, anywhere in Greater Manchester, use this routine.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Mostyn Avenue.

- Daft as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap does the trick — once you have found the filler and read it.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Only after that, start the vehicle: close the cap, check again, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you have already poured into the diesel side.

Skip step five entirely.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around Seedfield?

The short order of things, beginning with not starting your motor.

Don't switch your ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Thinning it with extra diesel fails, since AdBlue settles to the base rather than blending — and that is where your fuel is pulled from.

At a forecourt — Tesco, EG On the Move or another — the staff will normally help push your car clear, if you ask.

Your own driveway in Seedfield is the place it should stay.

If the motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

Come off the M66 — under a mile out of Seedfield — at the first junction.

A short hop across Seedfield is a smaller job than a run towards Salford, under 10 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## When our technicians arrive in Seedfield, what takes place?

Our engineers come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Chesham Primary Academy, close to St John with St Mark or on your own drive.

The replies settle the work and our price, so our technicians ask what went in, about how much, and if it's run.

On the call itself, you hear our price — ahead of dispatch.

Draining your tank comes next, then a thorough flush of the fuel system.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own.

Once your filter is flushed — or renewed, where needed — clean diesel goes in, and finally your car is tested.

After that our engineers start the car and confirm it runs smoothly before we go.

Using pumps safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where your engine hasn't run take roughly half an hour once our engineers arrive.

Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you are given the paperwork your insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

It's worth checking your insurance as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover comes with many policies.
