# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Seven Sisters: How It Occurs and How to Stop It

Pause here a minute if your diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, then ring 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your motor runs, it is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Seven Sisters.

If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it does not.

## AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

Many current diesels on the roads round Seven Sisters and Craven Walk carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the motor.

Your exhaust, not your engine, is where AdBlue ends up: dosed into the fumes to fresh them, from a separate tank.

Different tanks, separate fillers.

Plenty of cars have a single flap for both, whereas some put the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

Topping up the diesel side at the petrol pump goes on constantly.

The AdBlue side is filled far less regularly, usually from a bottle, and normally by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes.

The mistake grows in that gap between the two.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Seven Sisters: how it happens

Seldom is it carelessness: usually three things line up.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a message from the vehicle, and running dry means limp mode — hence a rushed top-up, maybe before work off Stonebridge Road, or at The Fountain on the way home after work.

Then your car is strange. A hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

A spouted bottle meets no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, after started, carries on.

Tottenham Green or the heart of Seven Sisters: it takes the same few seconds in both.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Before you tip anything, whether on a drive in Tottenham Hale or a forecourt around Seven Sisters, check these. They take a few seconds.

- Read the cap rather than going by where it sits: AdBlue ones are commonly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally aren't.

- The size. On many motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Many cars say there which fuel goes where.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that is where the filler is if it's not by your diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- The previous driver will know. Ask when you pick up a rental or fleet car — from the nearest station's car park, say — not once the warning comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

Wherever across Greater London the light comes on, this is a routine for the day.

- Turn off once parked — level ground, engine stopped, and not rushed by Seven Sisters Road on the verge.

- Find the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and speak the word "AdBlue" out loud as unscrewing it. It seems daft. It works.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Stop when your tank is topped up or the bottle is empty; before that, pour gently using its own spout.

- Shut the cap, and look again — confirm your diesel filler remained shut throughout. Only then, start the car.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Don't go on to stage five.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, in Seven Sisters?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start your engine.

The fuel pump starts on many diesels as soon as the ignition is switched on — so keep it off.

Don't top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is drawn from.

On a forecourt — Esso, Sainsbury's or any other — the attendants will usually help roll the vehicle away, if you ask.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive in Seven Sisters.

If your motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

On the M11, under 5 miles from Seven Sisters, that means the next junction.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards London, under 5 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Seven Sisters.

## What happens when we get there around Seven Sisters

Our technicians come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Earlsmead Primary School, close to Kingdom Hall or on your own driveway.

Both the work and the quote rest on three replies — what fluid, which amount, and whether it has run — so our engineers ask.

During the call itself, you are told the quote — ahead of dispatch.

Next: draining, then a thorough flush of the entire system.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own.

The filter cleaned or, if needed, replaced; clean diesel in; then a test of your vehicle.

The engine is started next and tested to make sure it runs properly, all before our technicians head off.

If your engine has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Your insurer usually wants the engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and you get both at the end. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront.

Misfuelling cover is included in many insurance policies — and so use the wait to look at yours.
