# How It Occurs and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Shacklecross

Stop here a minute if the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, and call 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a full flush, done just where your vehicle sits in Shacklecross, is normally what it needs if caught before the engine runs.

Here in advance? In that case the rest covers why it comes about and how to prevent it ever happening.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

Plenty of newer diesels around Draycott, as well as Shacklecross, run on two liquids; your engine gets just the diesel.

Its own tank holds it, and from there it goes to your exhaust, where a spray cleans the fumes.

Each tank has its own filler.

Many of vehicles share a single flap for both, whereas some move the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is filled at the pump all the time.

The AdBlue side is filled far less commonly, normally from a bottle, and usually by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes.

The mistake lives in that gap.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank occur around Shacklecross?

Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things line up.

Hurry comes from the warning. The vehicle tells you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank puts it into limp mode — so the top-up gets done in a rush, before work on a driveway off Charnwood Avenue, or on the way home in the car park outside The Nags Head.

The old car's filler is where your hand reaches — but a hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers somewhere else. That is the second thing: a strange vehicle.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the tip after it has started.

Whether it happens in Borrowash or the middle of Shacklecross, it is the same few seconds.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Before you pour anything, whether on a driveway in Ambaston or a forecourt around Shacklecross, check these. They take a few seconds.

- Check the cap rather than going by position: AdBlue ones are commonly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally are not.

- On many cars, the size tells: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- Open the filler flap and check for a label — plenty of motors show what goes in which filler right there.

- The handbook. If the filler is not by your diesel cap, it's in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Collecting a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park outside Spondon? Check with whoever drove the car last before you set off, rather than when the light goes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around Derbyshire that is.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with your motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Ballards Way.

- Daft as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew the cap works — once you have located your filler and read the cap.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the car on.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Only then, start the vehicle: close the cap, check again, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Spot at stage two or three that it has already gone into your diesel side? So stop just there.

Step five is out.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Shacklecross already?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start the engine.

The fuel pump runs on many diesels as soon as the ignition is switched on — so leave it off.

Do not top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is sucked from.

Ask the staff to help push the vehicle clear of the pump if you're at a forecourt — the Shell, the Texaco or somewhere else.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive around Shacklecross.

If the engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

Come off the M1 — under 3 miles out of Shacklecross — at the next exit.

A short hop across Shacklecross is a smaller job than a run towards Derby, under 5 miles away, so tell us about how far it went.

## When our technicians get there in Shacklecross, what takes place?

By Ashbrook Junior School, near Ashbrook Community Centre or on your own driveway: wherever the car has stopped, our engineers come to it.

The answers decide this work and our quote, and so we ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether it's run.

Nobody sets off before you've heard the quote over the phone.

Then the tank is emptied and the fuel system cleaned thoroughly.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own — which is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol.

Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

We don't go until it has been fired up and is running smoothly.

Most jobs are done in about half an hour once we arrive, as long as your engine has not run — and the pumps our technicians use are safe on a busy forecourt yet quiet at night beside a house.

Nothing in advance; you settle up on the day. At the end, a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer go to you for the insurer.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours while we're on the way.

Quote a postcode that starts DE72 3, and the van arrives quickest.

There's no need to shift the vehicle.

Wherever it stands — near 147th Derby (3rd Ockbrook & Borrowash) Scouts, on a layby heading to Derwent Meadows Playing Fields, at home — that's where it gets emptied.

Assuming won't help behind William Barron 1805-1891, close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to pin down; phone and ask.

## In short, for Shacklecross motorists

Pour nothing until you've read the cap.
