# Why It Occurs and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Shadwell

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? In that case put this page aside a moment, leave the ignition and motor off, then phone 0333 366 0103.

A drain plus a thorough flush, done just where the car stands around Shadwell, is usually what it takes when caught before the engine runs.

Reading in advance? Then the rest explains why it comes about and what to stop it ever happening.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

Many modern diesels on the roads around Shadwell and Rotherhithe carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the motor.

The exhaust, not your motor, is where AdBlue ends up: sprayed into the fumes to fresh them, from a separate tank.

Each tank comes with one filler of its own.

Under one flap, next to each other: that is the layout on a lot of motors. On others, AdBlue's filler sits beneath the bonnet or in the boot instead.

The diesel side is fuelled at the pump all the time.

Someone who has to stop and think where it goes usually tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less frequently.

That gap is where the mistake lives.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank takes place in Shadwell

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it runs out completely, your vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Glamis Road before work, or in the car park at The Prospect of Whitby on the way home.

The old car's cap is where the hand reaches — but a hire car, a new motor or a company car keeps the fillers elsewhere. That is the second factor: a strange vehicle.

Third, the spout goes in: a diesel filler or AdBlue one, it goes in as readily, and after the pour begins, nothing stops it.

Whether it happens in St George in the East or the middle of Shadwell, it is the same few seconds.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Be it a Shadwell forecourt or a driveway out in Limehouse, take a few seconds on these before any goes in.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally is not. Read it rather than going by where it sits.

- On many cars, size tells: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Plenty of motors say there which fuel goes where.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that is where your filler sits if it is not by the diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- The previous driver will know. Check when you collect a rental or company car — from the nearest station's car park, say — rather than when the warning appears.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

Anywhere around Greater London the light comes on, here is a routine for the day.

- Not in a rush on the side of Peartree Lane, not on a slope, not with the motor running: park then switch off properly.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it works.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Before you start the car, shut the cap and check again that the diesel cap was never came off.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you've already poured into your diesel side.

Stage five is off limits.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Shadwell already?

Do not start the engine: that's where the short order of things starts.

On many diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so do not switch the vehicle on.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is sucked from — so do not top up with diesel to dilute it.

Ask the attendants to help push your car away from the petrol pump if you are on a forecourt — the JET, the Texaco or anywhere else.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own driveway around Shadwell.

If the motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

Leave the M11 — under 10 miles out of Shadwell — at the first exit.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards London, under 3 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Shadwell.

## When our technicians turn up in Shadwell, what happens?

By Blue Gate Fields Junior School, near Shadwell Basin Outdoor Activity Centre or on your own drive: wherever the vehicle has stopped, we come to it.

Our technicians ask what was put in, roughly how much, and whether it has run, since the replies settle this work and the quote.

The quote is given over the phone, before any van leaves.

Then the tank is cleared and the fuel system flushed thoroughly.

More than with petrol, it matters here: crystals form, some metals are attacked, and none of it clears away unaided, however long it sits.

After the filter is cleaned — or replaced, if required — fresh diesel is added, and finally the vehicle is tested.

Before leaving, our engineers fire it up and check that it's running smoothly.

Unrun vehicles usually need a half-hour visit from the moment we arrive. The equipment is safe on a busy filling station, and quiet enough for a residential street after dark.

The insurer will ask for an engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and both are yours once this job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront.

Misfuelling cover is included in plenty of insurance policies — and so use the wait to look at yours.
