# Shaftesbury: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

Stop reading a minute when your diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, then ring 0333 366 0103.

A drain plus a full flush, done just where the car sits in Shaftesbury, is normally what it takes when caught before the motor runs.

The rest of this page covers why it occurs and how to ensure it does not — handy if you're reading before it has happened.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

Diesel goes to your engine — but plenty of newer diesels driven round Shaftesbury and Alcester hold a second liquid as well.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has its own filler.

Many of motors share a single flap for the two, whereas some move the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is topped up at the petrol pump all the time.

A driver who has to stop and work out where it goes normally tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less regularly.

The slip lives in that gap.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank occur around Shaftesbury?

Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things line up.

Hurry follows from the warning. Your car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank sends the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up happens quickly, before work on a driveway off Mustons Lane, or on the way home in the car park at The Mitre.

Then your car is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and your hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

A spout-topped bottle meets no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. So the tip, once begun, keeps on.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Shaftesbury or out in Ivy Cross.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Before you tip anything, whether on a driveway in Long Cross or a forecourt around Shaftesbury, check these. They take a few seconds.

- Colour and lettering: an AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally does not. Trust the cap, not its position.

- On many motors, size gives it away: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Many cars say there which fuel goes where.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that's where your filler sits if it's not by the diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- Whoever had it before knows. Check when you collect a hire car or company car — at Gillingham (Dorset)'s car park, perhaps — not once the light appears.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

For the day the light appears — wherever you are in Dorset — a simple routine to follow.

- Not in a rush on the side of High Street, not on a slope, not with your motor running: park then switch off properly.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it does the trick.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Stop once the tank fills or the bottle runs dry; before that, tip slowly through the own spout.

- Before starting the car, close the cap and check again that your diesel cap was never came off.

Find at step two or three that it has already gone into your diesel side? So stop just there.

Skip step five altogether.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Shaftesbury?

Short order, then. Top of it: the motor stays unstarted.

Do not switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Thinning it with extra diesel fails, since AdBlue settles to the bottom instead of mixing — and that's where your fuel is sucked from.

Ask the attendants to help push the car away from the petrol pump if you're on a forecourt — the Tesco, the Esso or somewhere else.

If you are on your own drive in Shaftesbury, leave the vehicle where it stands.

If the engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

The next exit means where to leave if you're on the M27, under 50 miles from Shaftesbury.

About how far did it go? Crossing Shaftesbury is smaller work than a trip of under 25 miles towards Salisbury, and so tell us.

## Shaftesbury: what takes place when our engineers turn up

The van comes to your car wherever it stopped — your own drive, near The Cygnet, or outside The Abbey CofE VA Primary School, Shaftesbury.

Which liquid went in, the amount, and whether it ran: our engineers ask since those answers set the work and quote.

On the phone call itself, you are told our quote — ahead of anything else.

Draining your tank comes next, then a full flush of the fuel system.

Not like petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and eats at certain fuel-system metals, and neither washes out unaided. Hence it counts more.

The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

The motor is fired up next and tested to confirm it runs properly, all before our technicians head off.

If your engine hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Nothing upfront; you settle up that day. Afterwards, the VAT invoice and a report from the engineer are handed to you for your insurer.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours while we are on the way.

## Shaftesbury and Dorset: AdBlue drains across the area

St James and Enmore Green are among the towns around Shaftesbury, a town, that the same vans cover, throughout SP postcodes.

Give a postcode that starts SP7 8, and our van gets there fastest.

No need to shift your car.

Our technicians drain it where it is — a side street near Shaftesbury Library, a lay-by on the way to Barton Hill Recreation Ground, a driveway.

Tricky to pin down, like the back of Angel Inn? Close to a county line? Checking beats assuming, and so phone.

## For Shaftesbury motorists, the short version

Read the cap before you tip.
