# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Sharow: Why It Occurs

Pause here for a moment if the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and call 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the engine runs, it's normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Sharow.

The remainder of this page covers why it takes place and how to ensure it does not — handy if you're reading ahead of time.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank

Diesel feeds your engine — yet many modern diesels driven around Sharow and Copt Hewick carry a second fluid too.

The exhaust, not your motor, is where AdBlue goes: sprayed into the gas to clean it, from a separate tank.

Each tank has its own filler.

Under one flap, next to each other: that's the layout on many vehicles. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler sits beneath the bonnet or in your boot instead.

Topping up your diesel side at the pump happens constantly.

A driver who has to stop and work out where it goes normally fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less commonly.

That gap is where the error lives.

## Sharow: how AdBlue in the diesel tank happens

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

On a driveway off Keldale Gardens before work, or in the car park at The Magdalens heading home: that is where the hurried top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue runs low your car warns you, and once it's gone, limp mode follows.

New-to-you cars come next, too. Rentals, new motors and company vehicles place their fillers in new places, and habit reaches for the cap used on the old one.

Nothing halts the pour after it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Whether it happens in Little Studley or the middle of Sharow, it's the same few seconds.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Be it a Sharow forecourt or a driveway out in Hutton Conyers, spend a few seconds over these before anything is poured in.

- Position can mislead; the cap doesn't. AdBlue ones are often blue or carry the name "AdBlue" — diesel ones usually do not.

- Look at the size: the smaller neck is, on plenty of motors, the AdBlue one.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Many motors say there which fuel goes where.

- Can't find it beside the diesel filler? In that case check below the bonnet or inside your boot — the handbook says which.

- Collecting a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park outside Thirsk? Check with the person who drove the car last before you set off, rather than when the light goes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

Wherever across North Yorkshire the light comes on, here is a routine for the day.

- Not in a rush on the side of Dishforth Road, not on a slope, not with your motor running: park and switch off first.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and speak the word "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew it. It seems daft. It does the trick.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave it on.

- Finish when the tank fills or the bottle runs dry; before that, tip gently through its built-in spout.

- Shut the cap, then check again — confirm the diesel filler remained closed throughout. After that, start the vehicle.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Don't carry on to step five.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around Sharow?

Brief order, then. Top of it: your engine remains unstarted.

The fuel pump starts on many diesels as soon as the ignition is switched on — so keep it off.

Do not top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is drawn from.

On a forecourt — BP, Morrisons or another — the attendants will normally help roll your car clear, when you ask.

If you're on your own driveway in Sharow, leave it where it is.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the engine has already run.

Leave the A1(M) — under 3 miles out of Sharow — at the first exit.

About how far did it go? Hopping across Sharow is less a job than a trip of under 3 miles towards Ripon, so tell us.

## When we get there around Sharow, what occurs?

By Sharow Church of England Primary School, close to Saint John the Divine or on your own drive: wherever the vehicle has stopped, we come to it.

Both the work and our price depend on three answers — what liquid, which quantity, and whether it has run — so our engineers ask.

You get that quote by phone, before anyone heads out.

Draining your tank comes next, followed by a thorough flush of the fuel system.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own.

Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

The motor is fired up next and tested to confirm it runs properly, all before our engineers head off.

Most jobs are done in about half an hour once our technicians arrive, provided the engine has not run — and the pumps our technicians use are safe on a busy forecourt yet quiet after dark beside a house.

Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork an insurer asks for: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

Misfuelling cover is part of plenty of insurance policies — and so make use of the wait to look at yours.

## Sharow motorists: the short version

Pour nothing until you've read the cap.

If AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank regardless, leave it off and call 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel clears it where it waits, anywhere around North Yorkshire.
