# Shaw Clough: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the motor and your ignition off then call 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your engine runs, it's generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Shaw Clough.

The rest of this page explains why it takes place and how to ensure it doesn't — handy if you are reading ahead of time.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

Many newer diesels on the roads around Shaw Clough and Whitewell Bottom carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the motor.

Your exhaust, not the engine, is where AdBlue goes: dosed into the gas to clean them, from its own tank.

There is a filler on each tank.

Under one flap, side by side: that's the arrangement on a lot of cars. On others, AdBlue's filler is under the bonnet or in your boot instead.

At the petrol pump, your diesel side is topped up all the time.

The AdBlue side is filled far less frequently, normally from a bottle, and normally by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes.

That gap is where the error lives.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank takes place in Shaw Clough

Carelessness seldom causes it. Instead is three things lining up together.

On a driveway off Shaw Clough Road before work, or in the car park at Roebuck on the way home: that's where the hurried top-up takes place. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue runs low the car warns you, and if it is empty, limp mode follows.

Unfamiliar motors come second, too. Hire cars, new motors and company cars place their fillers differently, and the hand reaches for the cap it used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the pour once it has started.

Whether it takes place in Scout or the middle of Shaw Clough, it's the same few seconds.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

A few seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you pour anything, on a driveway in Siss Clough or a forecourt around Shaw Clough.

- Position can mislead; the cap doesn't. AdBlue ones tend to be blue or bear the name "AdBlue" — diesel ones usually do not.

- Look at the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- Look inside your fuel flap: many vehicles have a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- Cannot see it beside the diesel inlet? Then look beneath the bonnet or inside the boot — the handbook says where.

- Picking up a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park outside Burnley Manchester Road? Ask whoever drove it last before leaving, rather than when the light goes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

When the light goes on, anywhere across Lancashire, use this routine.

- Turn off after you park — level ground, engine stopped, and never in a rush beside Fearns Moss at the roadside.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after you find the AdBlue filler and reading it. Daft, yes, yet it does the trick.

- The two behind a single flap? So make sure the lid on your diesel filler stays closed ahead of lifting the bottle.

- Slowly does it, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle runs out.

- Before starting the vehicle, shut the cap and check again that your diesel cap never opened off.

Spot at step two or three that it's already gone into the diesel side? Then stop right there.

Leave out stage five altogether.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Shaw Clough already?

What follows is a short order of things, beginning with not starting the motor.

On many diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch the vehicle on.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is pulled from — so do not top up with diesel to dilute it.

Ask the attendants to help roll the car clear of the pump if you're on a forecourt — the Shell, the Texaco or anywhere else.

Your own drive in Shaw Clough is where it should stay.

If your engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

The next junction means where to leave if you're on the M66, under 5 miles from Shaw Clough.

Mileage counts — a short hop across Shaw Clough is a smaller job than driving under 25 miles to Manchester — so tell us roughly how far it went.

## When we arrive in Shaw Clough, what occurs?

Our engineers come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside St Anne's Church of England Primary School, near St Anne or on your own driveway.

Both the work and the price rest on three replies — what fluid, what quantity, and whether it has run — so our engineers ask.

You hear that price by phone, before anybody sets off.

Your system is then purged thoroughly, after that tank is cleared.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own.

Filter flushed or, if needed, swapped; fresh diesel in; then a check of the car.

Next we start the engine and make sure it runs correctly before leaving.

Most jobs are finished in roughly half an hour once our engineers arrive, provided the engine has not run — and the pumps our technicians use are safe on a live forecourt and quiet after dark beside a house.

Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork your insurer wants: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

Before we get there, have a look at your policy; many carry cover for misfuelling.
