# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Shaw Lane: Why It Occurs and How to Avoid It

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the motor and the ignition off then ring 0333 366 0103.

Usually, if the motor hasn't turned, it's emptied and fully purged where the car is in Shaw Lane.

If you're reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Plenty of newer diesels in Greenbottom, like those in Shaw Lane, carry on two liquids; the motor gets just your diesel.

The exhaust, not your engine, is where AdBlue goes: dosed into the gas to fresh it, from a separate tank.

There's a filler for each tank.

Many of vehicles have a single flap for both, while others put the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is fuelled at the petrol pump all the time.

Rarely filled, AdBlue normally goes in out of a bottle, poured by a driver who must stop and think what cap it needs.

The slip lives in that gap.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank happens in Shaw Lane

It's rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

On a drive off Newlands Avenue before work, or in the car park at The Midway heading home: that is where the hurried top-up takes place. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue runs low the car warns you, and if it's empty, limp mode follows.

Unfamiliar cars come second, too. Rentals, new cars and company motors place their fillers differently, and habit reaches for the cap it used on the old one.

Third, the bottle goes in: a diesel filler or AdBlue one, it slides in as easily, and once the pour starts, no part stops it.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Shaw Lane or out in Yeadon.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Before you tip anything, whether on a driveway in Nether Yeadon or a forecourt around Shaw Lane, check these. They take a few seconds.

- Read the cap instead of going by position: AdBlue ones are often blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally aren't.

- On many motors, size tells: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- Look inside your fuel flap: many cars carry a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If the filler isn't by your diesel cap, it is in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- The previous driver will know. Ask when you collect a rental or fleet car — from Guiseley's car park, say — not once the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

Anywhere across West Yorkshire the light comes on, this is a routine for that day.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Coppice Wood Avenue.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it does the trick.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave it on.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Before you start your car, close the cap and look again that your diesel cap never opened off.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you have already poured into the diesel side.

Never go on to stage five.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Shaw Lane already?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start the motor.

Do not switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Thinning it with extra diesel fails, because AdBlue settles to the base rather than blending — and that is where your fuel is sucked from.

The attendants at Morrisons, Morrison's Petrol Filling Station or any forecourt will usually lend a hand to push the vehicle away if you ask.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own driveway in Shaw Lane.

Already started? Stop when it is sensible, then turn off.

The next exit means where to leave if you are on the Inner Ring Road, under 10 miles from Shaw Lane.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Bradford, under 10 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Shaw Lane.

## Shaw Lane: what occurs when our technicians arrive

Our van comes to the vehicle anywhere it has come to rest — your own drive, near Yeadon Park Bowling Club, or outside Queensway Primary School.

Those answers settle the work and our price, so our engineers ask what was put in, roughly how much, and if it has run.

That price is given on the call, before any van leaves.

Then that tank is emptied and the fuel system flushed thoroughly.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own.

After the fuel filter has been cleaned — or renewed, where required — clean diesel goes in, and finally the car is tested.

Before we go, our technicians fire it up and check that it's running smoothly.

Unrun vehicles usually need a half-hour job from arrival. The kit is safe on a live forecourt, and quiet enough for a driveway after dark.

Nothing upfront; you settle up that day. Afterwards, a VAT invoice and the report from the engineer are handed to you for the insurer.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.
