# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Shawhead: Why It Happens

Stop reading a minute when your diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, then phone 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your motor runs, it's usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Shawhead.

Not happened yet? Further down, the rest of the page explains the why it takes place and the ways to prevent it for good.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Many newer diesels on the roads around Shawhead and Kirkshaws carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your engine.

Your exhaust, not the engine, is where AdBlue goes: sprayed into the gas to clean it, from its own tank.

Each tank has its own filler.

Under one flap, next to each other: that is the layout on a lot of cars. On others, AdBlue's filler is beneath the bonnet or in the boot instead.

Diesel goes in at each filling station visit, again and again.

A driver who has to stop and work out where it goes normally fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less often.

It's in that gap that the slip lives.

## Shawhead: how AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

Hurry follows from the warning. Your car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank sends it into limp mode — so the top-up happens in a rush, before work on a drive off Rose Gardens, or on the way home in the car park outside Kirkshaws Club.

Then the car is new. A hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and your hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.

No part stops the tip after it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Whether it happens in Rosehall or the middle of Shawhead, it's the same few seconds.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Before you tip anything, whether on a driveway in Barrowfield or a forecourt in Shawhead, check these. They take a few seconds.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally is not. Read it rather than going by position.

- Plenty of cars fit AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- A label inside the fuel flap frequently says which fuel goes where, on plenty of cars. Look for it.

- The handbook. If your filler is not by your diesel cap, it is in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Whifflet.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

When the light comes on, anywhere across North Lanarkshire, follow this routine.

- Stop on level, motor off, with time in hand — not rushing on the side of Palacecraig Street.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it does the trick.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the vehicle on.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Before starting your car, shut the cap and look again that your diesel cap never opened off.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Stage five stays out.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Shawhead?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start the motor.

Don't switch your ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Do not top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is pulled from.

If you are on a forecourt, whether it is the Esso or the Gulf, ask the staff to help roll your car away from the petrol pump.

Your own drive in Shawhead is where it stays.

If your motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

On the M8, under a mile from Shawhead, that means the next junction.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Glasgow, under 10 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Shawhead.

## What takes place when our engineers arrive in Shawhead

We come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside the local primary school, close to Mackinnon Mills or on your own drive.

Both the work and the quote rest on three replies — which fluid, what quantity, and whether it's run — so we ask.

No one heads out until you've heard the quote by phone.

Emptying the tank comes next, followed by a thorough flush of the fuel system.

More than with petrol, it counts with AdBlue: the crystals build up, some metals are attacked, and none of it clears away on its own, however long it sits.

Once the filter has been cleaned — or renewed, if needed — fresh diesel is added, and then your car gets tested.

Then we fire it up and check it runs properly before leaving.

Unrun cars usually mean a half-hour job from the moment we arrive. The kit is safe on a live filling station, and quiet enough for a residential street after dark.

Paying is on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork your insurer wants: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours while we are on the way.
