# Why It Occurs and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Shay House

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? Then set this page aside for now, keep your ignition and motor off, then call 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the engine runs, it is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Shay House.

The remainder of this page explains why it occurs and how to make sure it does not — handy if you are reading ahead of time.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

Diesel feeds the motor — but plenty of modern diesels driven round Shay House and Spink Hall hold another fluid too.

AdBlue's own tank keeps it, and from there it is sent to the exhaust, and there a spray cleans the fumes.

There's a filler on every tank.

Under one flap, side by side: that is the arrangement on many motors. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler sits beneath the bonnet or in your boot instead.

Diesel gets filled at each forecourt visit, week in, week out.

Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes usually tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less commonly.

It's in that gap that the slip happens.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank take place in Shay House?

Carelessness rarely causes it. What does is three things coming up at once.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a message from the vehicle, and running dry means limp mode — so a rushed top-up, maybe before work off Linden Crescent, or outside Legionnaires Club on the way home after work.

Unfamiliar vehicles are next, too. Hire cars, new vehicles and company vehicles place their fillers in new places, and habit goes for the cap it used on the old one.

A spout-topped bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, after started, carries on.

Pot House or the heart of Shay House: it is the same few seconds in both.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Before you pour anything, whether on a drive in Horner House or a forecourt in Shay House, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Where it sits can mislead; the cap doesn't. AdBlue ones tend to be blue or carry the word "AdBlue" — diesel caps normally don't.

- On many vehicles, the size tells: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Many motors say there which fuel goes where.

- Cannot see it next to the diesel filler? In that case check beneath the bonnet or in the boot — the handbook will say where.

- Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park at Penistone? Check with the person who drove it last before you set off, not once the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in South Yorkshire that is.

- Not in a rush on the side of Shay Road, not on a slope, not with your engine running: park then switch off first.

- Daft as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap does the trick — after you've located your filler and read the cap.

- The two behind one flap? Then confirm the lid on the diesel filler stays closed ahead of lifting the bottle.

- Finish once that tank fills or the bottle is empty; until then, pour gently using the own spout.

- Only after that, start the car: close the cap, check again, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you've already poured into the diesel side.

Leave out step five altogether.

## Shay House: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Do not start the engine: that is how the short order of things begins.

The fuel pump starts on plenty of diesels as soon as your ignition goes on — so leave it off.

Topping up with diesel will not dilute it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the bottom of the tank, just where the fuel is drawn from.

Ask the attendants to help push the vehicle away from the petrol pump if you are at a forecourt — the JET, the Murco or anywhere else.

If you're on your own drive around Shay House, leave it where it sits.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the engine has already run.

The next exit is the place to come off if you are on the M1, under 5 miles from Shay House.

A short hop across Shay House is a smaller job than a run towards Sheffield, under 10 miles away, so tell us about how far it went.

## Shay House: what occurs when we get there

Our technicians come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside St Ann's Catholic Primary School, A Voluntary Academy, near The Salvation Army - Stocksbridge or on your own driveway.

Both the work and our price depend on three answers — which fluid, what amount, and if it has run — so we ask.

That price comes on the call, ahead of any van leaving.

After that: a drain, then a thorough flush of the entire system.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and eats at certain fuel-system metals, and none of it washes away by itself. That is why it counts more.

The fuel filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

Next we start the car and make sure it runs properly before we go.

If your engine hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

While we travel, have a look at your policy; plenty carry cover for misfuelling.
