# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Shedfield: Why It Occurs and How to Stop It

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? Then put this page down for now, keep the ignition and motor off, and call 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the engine runs, it is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Shedfield.

Not happened yet? Below, the rest of the page explains the reasons it takes place and the how to avoid it for good.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

Plenty of newer diesels on the roads about Shedfield and Waltham Chase carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the motor.

The exhaust, not the motor, is where AdBlue goes: sprayed into the gas to fresh it, from a separate tank.

Each tank has its own filler.

Under one flap, next to each other: that is the arrangement on many vehicles. On others, AdBlue's filler sits beneath the bonnet or in the boot instead.

Diesel goes in on every forecourt call-out, week in, week out.

Much less frequently, the AdBlue side is topped up — normally from a bottle, by someone thinking about where it goes.

The error lives in that gap.

## Shedfield: how AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs

Seldom is it carelessness: normally three things coincide.

Hurry follows from the warning. The car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank puts it into limp mode — so the top-up happens in a rush, before work on a driveway off Canford Close, or on the way home in the car park outside The Wheatsheaf Inn.

New-to-you cars come second, as well. Hire cars, new vehicles and company vehicles put their fillers in new places, and habit reaches for the cap used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the pour after it has started.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Shedfield or out in Turkey Island.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you pour anything, on a driveway in Wickham or a forecourt around Shedfield.

- Where it sits misleads; the cap doesn't. AdBlue ones are often blue or carry the word "AdBlue" — diesel ones usually do not.

- Plenty of vehicles give AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- Open the flap and look for a label — many cars show what belongs in each filler just there.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that's where the filler is if it's not by your diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- Whoever had it before knows. Ask as you pick up a hire car or company car — at Botley's car park, perhaps — not when the warning comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

For the day the light appears — anywhere it is around Hampshire — a routine to use.

- Pull in on level, motor off, with time in hand — never rushing on the side of Sloane Park.

- Silly as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew the cap works — once you have found the filler and read the cap.

- The diesel cap remains on. When both share a flap, make sure it is closed before lifting the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you have already poured into the diesel side.

Never carry on to stage five.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, in Shedfield?

Don't start your motor: that is how the short order of things begins.

The fuel pump runs on many diesels the moment your ignition is switched on — and so keep it off.

Diluting it with extra diesel fails, since AdBlue sinks to the bottom rather than mixing — and that is where the fuel is drawn from.

Ask the staff to help roll the car clear of the petrol pump if you are at a forecourt — the Shell, the BP or somewhere else.

Your own drive around Shedfield is where it stays.

Where the engine has run already, pull over somewhere safe and switch the vehicle off.

Shedfield sits under 5 miles from the M27; there, use the first junction.

A short hop across Shedfield is a smaller job than a run towards Southampton, under 10 miles away, so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Our arrival in Shedfield, and what occurs next

By St John the Baptist Church of England Primary School, close to Shedfield Church or on your own driveway: wherever your car has stopped, our technicians come to it.

Which liquid went in, the quantity, and if it ran: our engineers ask because the answers decide the work and price.

Nobody sets off before you've heard the price over the phone.

Then your tank is emptied and the system rinsed thoroughly.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own — which is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol.

Testing comes at the end: before that, clean diesel is added, and the filter is cleaned or replaced as needed.

Your engine is fired up next and tested to be sure it runs properly, all before we go.

Using pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where the motor hasn't run take roughly half an hour after our technicians arrive.

No money in advance; you settle up on the day. At the end, the VAT invoice and the report from the engineer are handed to you for your insurer.

It's worth looking at your policy while we travel to you: misfuelling cover comes with plenty of policies.

Your car stays put.

A driveway, a lay-by on the way to Shedfield Common, a side street near Climbing Tower: we drain it where it sits.

Tricky to explain, like the back of Wickham Vineyard? Close to a county line? Checking beats guessing, so ring.

## Shedfield motorists: the short version

Read the cap before you tip.

If AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank all the same, leave the car off then phone 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel clears it where it sits, anywhere across Hampshire.
