# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Sheeptown: How It Occurs and How to Avoid It

Stop here a minute when the diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and call 0333 366 0103.

Normally, if the motor hasn't turned, it is drained and fully flushed where the car sits around Sheeptown.

If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't.

## AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

Plenty of modern diesels on the roads about Sheeptown and Lurganare carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the engine.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has its own filler.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

Filling your diesel side at the petrol pump happens constantly.

Seldom topped up, AdBlue usually goes in from a bottle, poured by a driver who has to stop and think which cap it needs.

It's in that gap that the mistake lives.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Sheeptown: how it occurs

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a warning from the vehicle, and running dry leads to limp mode — hence a hurried top-up, perhaps before work off High Row, perhaps outside the pub in the village on the way home that evening.

Unfamiliar cars are second, too. Rentals, new cars and company motors put their fillers in new places, and habit goes for the cap it used on the old one.

A spout-topped bottle meets no resistance at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, once started, keeps on.

Whether it occurs in Mayobridge or the middle of Sheeptown, it is the same few seconds.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Check these first, on a forecourt in Sheeptown or a driveway out in Corrinshego. Seconds, that's all.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally isn't. Read it rather than going by position.

- Plenty of vehicles give AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- Look inside your fuel flap: many vehicles carry a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- Can't find it beside your diesel filler? In that case look below the bonnet or in the boot — the handbook will say which.

- Whoever had it before knows. Check when you collect a rental or company car — from the nearest station's car park, say — not when the light appears.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across County Down that is.

- Not in a rush on the side of Dunskey Street, not on a slope, not with the motor running: park then switch off properly.

- Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft. It does the trick.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap, and look again — confirm your diesel filler remained closed the whole time. Only then, start your car.

Find at the second or third step that the bottle went into the wrong tank? That is where you stop.

Never go on to step five.

## Sheeptown: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Short order, then. Top of that: your engine remains off.

Leave your ignition off too, because on plenty of diesels switching it on alone starts your fuel pump.

Filling up with diesel will not dilute it: rather than mixing, AdBlue drops to the bottom of that tank, just where fuel is taken from.

Ask the staff to help roll the car clear of the petrol pump if you are on a forecourt — the the nearest petrol station, the another forecourt nearby or anywhere else.

Your own drive in Sheeptown is where it should stay.

Where your motor has been run already, pull over somewhere safe and switch it off.

Leave the M77 — over 50 miles out of Sheeptown — at the first junction.

About how far did it go? Hopping across Sheeptown is smaller a job than a trip of under 3 miles towards Newry, so tell us.

## What happens when our engineers arrive around Sheeptown

The van comes to the car anywhere it has come to rest — your own drive, near the centre, or outside the local primary school.

We ask what was put in, roughly how much, and if it has run, since those answers determine this work and the price.

You hear that price by phone, before anyone heads out.

Then your tank is drained and the fuel system flushed thoroughly.

More than with petrol, it counts here: crystals form, certain metals are attacked, and nothing washes away unaided, however long it sits.

The fuel filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

We do not leave until it has been started and is running correctly.

If your motor has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

While we travel, have a look at your insurance documents; many include cover for misfuelling.
