# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Sheerwater? Keep It Switched Off

Engine off, ignition off: that's where you begin if AdBlue has gone into the diesel tank.

In plain terms, AdBlue is just urea in water.

The trouble starts once it is pulled through your pump — it will not ignite, and it won't combine with diesel.

If the motor has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally drained and thoroughly flushed where the car stands in Sheerwater.

No step comes before ringing 0333 366 0103.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Sheerwater: the first few minutes

To do:

- Keys out — then no one can switch anything on.

- If you're at all near moving traffic, put the hazard lights on.

- Which fluid, and roughly how much amount? Hang on to the bottle or the receipt, and we can know.

- Our van finds you fastest with a postcode starting GU21 5, or simply the name of a street close by, and so call from the car.

Not to do:

- Shifting your car just a few yards is no reason to fire up the motor.

- Do not switch your ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- Pouring in more diesel doesn't work: AdBlue settles out rather than thinning.

- Leave the car where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short way up Devonshire Avenue.

- Draining the tank yourself by the road isn't worth trying.

At a forecourt in Sheerwater, whether it's the Asda or another one, ask the staff to help you push the car away from the pump.

If you're on your own drive, leave the car precisely where it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Not your motor but your exhaust is where AdBlue is meant to go.

Its own reservoir keeps it, and from there it is fed into your exhaust, where it cleans the gas.

Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is designed to handle it.

It doesn't blend. Once it is tipped into a tank of diesel, AdBlue acts not at all like fuel.

It's heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of the tank, which is where the pickup draws fuel from.

A vehicle filled on a drive in Woodham yesterday evening and left unstarted counts as the straightforward case. Nothing has sucked the AdBlue up so far — but when the motor turns, that's what goes first, straight from the bottom of that tank.

From there it causes two kinds of harm.

What remains once the water evaporates is urea, which turns into crystals: they settle in tiny channels and block filters. Worse, it attacks some metals in a fuel system, and keeps going till it is flushed out.

Lines carrying AdBlue mean harm overnight for a car sitting in Sheerwater. Only in the tank, it stays stable.

The water in it causes harm of its own: your high-pressure pump and the injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel often the bigger fault?

Petrol put into a diesel on Esso's forecourt leaves your fuel watery — that's the whole fault.

Mixed through the diesel and sitting unused, it is harmless at that stage; running the engine is the harm.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely wrong substance.

It doesn't burn, so it can't just be run through.

Deposits and corrosion remain through the following tankful, and AdBlue splits back from your diesel, and so watering it won't work. Hence the flush matters so much, and turning your key "to see" costs more here than almost any other slip — in Hockering Estate or the centre of Sheerwater equally.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Not run? Then the AdBlue sits only in the tank, the easiest section of the whole system to clear, anywhere your car has stopped around Surrey.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Sheerwater

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many motors rests right next to your diesel filler, occasionally under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

Most of the time it occurs with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the forecourt.

Mostly, it happens in one of a couple of familiar ways.

Hurrying, outside Broadmere Primary Academy, after a warning light flashed on during the school run, someone refills the vehicle.

In the evening, a bottle goes in on a driveway close to Loder Close.

Or the vehicle is topped up in the car park at The Princess, in poor light, by someone who has never opened that flap before.

It takes place most in the motors motorists know least: a hire car, a new vehicle, a company car, or the second motor of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

Keep it off: that's the first step to the same mistake, wherever around Sheerwater or the remainder of Surrey you are.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Sheerwater, and your engine started?

The AdBlue has left the tank, then.

Through the filter, through the lines, and — with any running — into the injection pump and each injector: that's how far it has gone.

You may notice your engine running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, maybe on the way back from Sheerwater Recreation Ground or halfway across Sheerwater.

Pull over when safe. Switch off. Keep the car off rather than restarting it to check.

Every start pulls more of it through.

On the M25, under 3 miles from Sheerwater, the first junction is where to leave, and anywhere sensible is where to park — not driving on.

Hopping across Sheerwater to the car park by Parkview Community Centre is one matter; driving towards Westminster, under 25 miles away, is another, because every mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in. So distance matters.

Let us know about how far it had come.

There's more to clean out once the engine has run, and our technicians do all of it where the vehicle has ended up.

Caught soon, it very rarely leaves lasting damage.

## Sheerwater: how AdBlue is drained from a diesel

We come to the vehicle, wherever it has stopped around Sheerwater: a side street close to All Saints' Woodham Parish Church, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

Before anything else we ask what got in, roughly how much, and if your motor has been run, because those replies decide this work.

Then your tank is emptied where the car sits, and so the polluted fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, flushing counts: the fuel system is cleaned all the way through since what remains will not wash away unaided.

Clean diesel goes in after the fuel filter is cleaned — or replaced, if it needs to be — and after that your car is tested.

Roughly half an hour on site is typical for most jobs where your motor hasn't run.

Explosion-proof pumps mean a live forecourt sensible to work on, and they're quiet enough not to disturb the neighbours at night.

The last step is to bleed the system on fresh diesel.

At that point our engineers fire it up and you set off, whether from a parking bay by West Byfleet or a drive around Sheerwater.

We make sure it runs correctly on new diesel before leaving.

Our engineers do it all wherever your car has ended up, and it never needs to go to a garage.

You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report after that, which is what insurers want.

If you are near a border, or somewhere hard to describe, ring and ask rather than assuming.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Sheerwater: the cost of fixing it

Every job differs, and so no fixed price would be fair.

What shifts the cost is, first of all, whether the engine has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue went in; and then where your car is and whether our van can reach it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight gap behind Thistle Cottage.

Before any figure, not afterwards, each enquiry from Sheerwater opens with three checks: the fuel, the quantity, and whether the engine ran.

When those are answered, a range becomes one fixed figure.

Priced by phone before the engineer heads out, the job is paid for on the day — card or phone, nothing in advance.

Check your insurance whilst we're on the way: plenty include misfuelling cover.
