# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Shenley Lodge: How It Happens and How to Prevent It

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? Then put this page aside for now, keep the ignition and engine off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

A drain plus a full flush, carried out just where the vehicle sits around Shenley Lodge, is usually what it takes if caught before your engine runs.

The remainder of this page explains why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't — useful if you are reading before it has happened.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car

No single liquid but two: that's what many modern diesels near Shenley Lodge and The Bowl run, with diesel for the engine.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

There is a filler for every tank.

Some motors put the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; a lot more have the two together under one flap.

At the pump, your diesel side gets filled all the time.

The AdBlue side is fuelled far less often, normally from a bottle, and normally by a person who has to stop and think where it goes.

That gap is where the mistake lives.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank take place around Shenley Lodge?

Carelessness rarely causes it. Instead is three things coming up at once.

Haste follows from the warning. Your car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank sends it into limp mode — so the top-up gets done in a rush, before work on a driveway off H7 Chaffron Way, or on the way home in the car park outside Furzton Lake - Hungry Horse.

New-to-you motors come next, too. Rentals, new cars and company cars place their fillers differently, and habit goes for the cap used on the old one.

A spout-topped bottle meets no obstacle at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, once started, carries on.

Whether it happens in Furzton Lake or the middle of Shenley Lodge, it's the same few seconds.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Check these before pouring, on a forecourt in Shenley Lodge or a drive over in Bleak Hall. Seconds, no more.

- Read the cap rather than going by where it sits: AdBlue ones are commonly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps usually aren't.

- Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of motors, the AdBlue one.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Plenty of motors say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook shows where it lives when your filler isn't next to the diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Milton Keynes Central.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

For the day the light comes on — wherever you are around Buckinghamshire — a routine to use.

- Pull in on level, motor off, with time to spare — not rushing on the side of Rutherford Gate.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the car on.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Before starting the car, shut the cap and check again that your diesel cap never came off.

Find at the second or third step that AdBlue went into the wrong tank? That is where you stop.

Never go on to stage five.

## Shenley Lodge: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Brief order, then. Top of it: your motor remains unstarted.

Keep your ignition off too, because on plenty of diesels it alone starts the fuel pump.

Diluting it with extra diesel won't work, because AdBlue sinks to the base instead of mixing — and that's where the fuel is sucked from.

The attendants at Shell, BP or another forecourt will normally help to push the car clear if asked.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive around Shenley Lodge.

Already run? Stop when it is safe, then turn off.

On the M1, under 5 miles from Shenley Lodge, that means the next junction.

A short hop across Shenley Lodge is a smaller job than a run towards Milton Keynes, under 3 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Shenley Lodge: what happens when we turn up

Anywhere the car came to rest, be it outside Caroline Haslett Primary School, near Sundial or on your own drive, the van travels to it.

What fluid was put in, the quantity, and whether it ran: our engineers ask since the replies decide the work and quote.

Nobody sets off until you've heard the price by phone.

Next: a drain, then a full flush of the whole system.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and attacks certain fuel-system metals, and none of it washes out unaided. That is why it counts more.

After the fuel filter is cleaned — or replaced, if needed — fresh diesel goes in, and then your car gets tested.

Before leaving, our technicians fire it up and make sure that it's running correctly.

If the motor hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

No money in advance; you settle up on the day. Afterwards, the VAT invoice and a report from the engineer are handed to you for the insurer.

It's worth checking your policy as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover comes with many policies.
