# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Shepway? Keep It Switched Off

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Then leave the engine off — and the ignition as well.

In plain terms, AdBlue is simply urea in water.

As it is water-based, it will not burn and won't blend with diesel; trouble only starts once your pump begins pulling it.

Caught before the engine has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Shepway.

First, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Shepway: the first few minutes

Things to do:

- Keys out — that way nobody can switch anything on.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all close.

- The empty bottle or the receipt tells us the product and the amount, and so do not throw it out.

- Give us a postcode starting ME15 7, or whichever street lies closest, and our van finds you straight — so ring from wherever you are.

Things not to do:

- Do not start the motor, even for a moment to shift your car.

- Don't switch your ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- AdBlue does not dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra diesel won't weaken it.

- Even a short distance up Northumberland Road is too far to drive the vehicle.

- Do not try to drain it yourself by the roadside.

Get the attendants to help you move your car off the pumps if you're at a forecourt around Shepway, whether it is the Morrisons or elsewhere.

If you are on your own drive, leave the car just where it sits.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not the motor.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to fresh it.

A fuel pump isn't designed to cope with it, and AdBlue was never supposed to travel through one.

Inside a diesel tank it acts very differently from fuel. It does not mix in.

It's heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and collects at the bottom of that tank, which is where the pickup sucks fuel from.

A motor filled on a drive in Otham overnight and left unstarted is the simple case. No pump has sucked the AdBlue up so far — but when your motor runs, that's what is pulled first, directly from the bottom of the tank.

Two kinds of damage follow from there.

What is left once the water evaporates is urea, which turns into crystals: they lodge in narrow channels and clog filters. Worse, it attacks certain metals in a fuel system, and carries on till it is cleared out.

Lines holding AdBlue spell damage overnight for a car sitting in Shepway. Only inside that tank, it stays the same.

Water protects nothing. The high-pressure pump and every injector depend on diesel flowing through them, and so the water part damages them in its own right.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is often more serious than petrol

Petrol put into a diesel on Texaco's forecourt makes the fuel watery — that is the main fault.

It mixes with your diesel, and whilst it is inside the tank it does no harm; the harm comes from running the motor on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid as such is plainly the wrong one.

It doesn't burn, and so it cannot simply be run through.

It does not stay mixed, so it cannot be weakened. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your engine "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether your car is in Green Hill or the middle of Shepway.

As with petrol, there is good news.

If the engine has not run, the AdBlue is still in your tank, and the tank is the simplest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever across Kent the vehicle is sitting.

## Shepway: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Plenty of vehicles place the AdBlue cap beside the diesel one, now and then behind a single flap, and after dark the two may look the same. Nobody means it.

It usually takes place at home, from a container bought on the journey home, not at the filling station.

It tends to happen in a few familiar ways.

Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside Leigh Academy Molehill the refill is hurried.

In the evening, a container is tipped in on a driveway close to Cambridge Crescent.

Else, after dark by Wheatsheaf, the vehicle is refilled by someone opening that flap the first time.

It happens most in the cars drivers know least: a hire car, a new vehicle, a company car, or the second vehicle of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

Same slip, same first step — leave it off — anywhere you happen to be in Shepway or the rest of Kent.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Shepway, and the engine started?

Then the AdBlue has left your tank.

It has been drawn through the fuel filter and your lines, and if your motor ran for any time, it has reached your high-pressure pump and your injectors.

You may see the motor running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, perhaps on the way back from Senacre Woods or halfway across Shepway.

Pull over when it is safe. Turn off. Keep the car off instead of testing it again.

Each start pulls more of it through.

On the M20, under 3 miles from Shepway, the first junction is where to exit, and anywhere safe is where to park — not carrying on.

Mileage matters: each mile pushes the AdBlue further in, so heading towards Southend-on-Sea, under 25 miles away, makes a far bigger job than hopping across Shepway to the car park by The Beacon.

Let us know roughly how far it had come.

Once the motor has run, the flush takes in more, and all of it is done where the vehicle has stopped.

Very seldom does it leave permanent damage when it is spotted soon.

## Emptying AdBlue in a diesel in Shepway: what it takes

The vehicle remains put, whether that is a road near Shepway Library, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt around Shepway, and the van travels to it.

The job rests on three replies, which our technicians ask for first — what got in, the amount, and whether the motor has turned over.

The contaminated diesel and the urea leave together when your tank is emptied, right there.

Residue from AdBlue will not flush away unaided, so the fuel system gets a careful flush, which matters far more with urea than for petrol.

A test of your vehicle comes at the end, after clean diesel goes in and the fuel filter is flushed or, if needed, replaced.

Most of these jobs are a half-hour visit once our technicians get there, provided your motor has not run.

Explosion-proof pumps mean a busy forecourt sensible to work on, and they're quiet enough not to disturb the street at night.

Fresh diesel goes in to bleed the system, and that's the last step.

At that point our engineers fire it up and you set off, whether from a parking space outside Maidstone West or a driveway in Shepway.

The check before our technicians leave is that it runs properly on clean diesel.

The whole job is done where the car is, so it never needs to go to a workshop.

Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come afterwards.

## About Shepway and where it is

Shepway is a suburban area in Kent, situated approximately 33.9 miles from London and 21.1 miles from Southend-on-Sea. Shepway sits inland at an elevation of around 81 metres, near the communities of Willington, Park Wood, and Three Tees. Shepway is characterised by its predominantly semi-detached housing stock, which accommodates a population of around 7350 residents.

## Shepway and Kent: AdBlue drains across the area

Our teams that answer AdBlue jobs around Shepway also cover the locations round it, Willington, Park Wood and Three Tees among them, and most of Kent beyond, across the ME postcode area.

Phone and ask instead of guessing if you're close to a border, or somewhere awkward to pin down.

Shepway is a residential suburb, and an on-site drain suits it: whether the vehicle is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our technicians drain it where it stands, and so it never needs to be moved to us.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Shepway

No single figure could be fair, since every job differs.

The price shifts first with how long, if at all, your engine has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that got in. After that it rests on where the vehicle is and whether our van can get to it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight spot behind St Martin's Church.

What went in, what quantity, plus if the engine ran: each Shepway enquiry begins with exactly those, ahead of a quote, not afterwards.

Given those replies, a range narrows to one fixed figure.

You get that price on the phone, before anyone heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

Check your insurance whilst we're on the way: plenty carry misfuelling cover.

## In Shepway and still alongside your car?

Then the most helpful thing you can do is nothing to the car.

Keys out, motor off, ignition off.

Phone 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, roughly how much, and if it ran is everything we ask. Petrol in Diesel handles the rest throughout Kent, Shepway too.
