# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Shere? Don't Start It

Motor off, ignition off: that's where you begin if AdBlue has got into the diesel tank.

Urea mixed in water is all AdBlue is.

It does not burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the harm it does starts when the fuel system pulls it in.

Caught before the motor has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Shere.

First, call us on 0333 366 0103.

## What to do right now, Shere: AdBlue in your diesel tank

To do:

- Keys out — then no one can switch anything on.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere near.

- Which fluid, and roughly what quantity? Save the bottle or the receipt, and our engineers will know.

- Call right where you are. Say a GU5 9 postcode or the nearest street sign, and nobody has to search for you.

Things not to do:

- Not even for a second, and not to roll the vehicle: the motor remains off.

- Do not switch the ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- No extra fuel on top. The AdBlue will not blend, so it's wasted.

- Do not drive it anywhere, not even a short stretch up Church Lane.

- Beside the road, don't try draining it on your own.

Moving your vehicle away from the pumps is a job for staff to help with, wherever Shere forecourt you are on, the Esso included.

At your own drive, don't touch it at all.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not your motor.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to fresh it.

A fuel pump is not designed to take it, and AdBlue was never supposed to go through one.

Inside a diesel tank it acts really differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in.

It's heavier than diesel, so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of that tank, which is where the pickup pulls fuel from.

A vehicle topped up on a driveway in Burrows Cross yesterday evening and left unstarted is the simple case. Nothing has pulled the AdBlue up so far — but when your motor runs, that's what is pulled first, straight from the bottom of the tank.

After it is sucked in, the harm comes in two forms.

It attacks some metals found in fuel systems, attacking any part it reaches till it's removed completely. And once the water goes, the urea turns into crystals that clog filters and settle in tiny passages.

A car left sitting around Shere with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank isn't.

Diesel protects the injection pump and each injector as it passes; water offers none of that, which is a second kind of harm.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it's commonly worse than petrol

Petrol put into a diesel on Shell's forecourt leaves your fuel watery — that's the whole problem.

Blended into your diesel and left unused, it is harmless for now; using the engine is the damage.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid itself is plainly the wrong one.

Not burning, it can't simply be run through.

It doesn't stay mixed, and so it cannot be weakened. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your engine "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether your car is in Brook or the middle of Shere.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

If your motor has not run, the AdBlue is still in your tank, and your tank is the quickest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever around Surrey your car is standing.

## Shere: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

It is not on purpose. Many vehicles have the AdBlue cap beside the diesel one, now and then behind one flap, and muddling them up is easy in poor light.

Most of the time it occurs with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the forecourt.

It tends to occur in a couple of familiar ways.

Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside Shere CofE Aided Infant School the refill is hurried.

In the evening, a bottle goes in on a drive near Shere Lane.

Or someone unfamiliar with that flap refills the car in dim light, parked in the car park by The White Horse.

It crops up most in a hire car, a brand-new car, a fleet vehicle, or the spare motor of a home with one of each fuel types — the cars people know least.

Wherever in Surrey, Shere as well, the mistake does not change, and neither does the first response: leave it switched off.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Shere, and the motor started?

The AdBlue has left that tank, then.

The fuel filter and lines have had it sucked along, and some running time takes it on to the high-pressure pump and each injector.

You may see your motor running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, perhaps on the way back from Silver Wood or halfway across Shere.

Once you safely can, stop then switch it off — without turning it on again to test.

Every start pulls more of that through.

Exit the M25, under 10 miles from Shere, by the first junction and park safely, not carrying on.

A quick hop across Shere to the car park by Saint James is one thing; heading towards Westminster, under 25 miles away, is another, since every mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in. So distance counts.

About how far it had come is worth telling us.

There's more to rinse out once the engine has run, and our technicians do all of it where the car has come to a stop.

Caught soon, it very seldom leaves lasting damage.

## Shere: how AdBlue is cleared from a diesel

Our engineers come to your car, wherever it has stopped in Shere: a side street close to Shere Museum, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

Three replies shape the work, and so first our technicians ask which fluid went in, about the amount, and whether your motor has run.

Right there, that tank is then emptied, and all of the contaminated diesel and the urea come out as one.

A full flush matters much more after AdBlue than with petrol, because what remains will not wash away by itself.

A test of your vehicle follows last, after fresh diesel goes in and your filter is flushed or, if necessary, replaced.

The majority of these jobs are a half-hour job once our engineers get there, provided your motor hasn't run.

Our pumping gear is explosion-proof, and so a busy forecourt is no problem, and it's quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

Last, the system is primed with new diesel.

Whether it's a parking bay by Gomshall or a driveway in Shere, that is where we start it and you set off.

We make sure it runs correctly on fresh diesel before leaving.

The entire job is done where your car is, so it never needs to go to a garage.

At the end, you are given paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer.

## About Shere, for a moment

Shere is a small village in Surrey, situated on the banks of the River Tillingbourne at an elevation of around 76 metres. Shere lies within the scenic North Downs, close to the villages of Gomshall and Albury, and is characterized by its semi-detached housing stock. Shere is also relatively close to London, being approximately 24.7 miles from the city centre. Shere remains a quiet, rural community with a population of around 654 residents.

## Shere and Surrey: AdBlue drains across the area

Gomshall, Albury Heath and Little London are among the towns around Shere that the same teams serve, along with much of Surrey beyond, throughout the GU postcode area.

Assuming doesn't help by a border or somewhere tricky to describe; phone and ask.

Anywhere the vehicle sits — a drive at home, a side street, a parking area, a filling station — our technicians empty it there, and there's no need to bring it to us; which suits Shere, a village, well.

## Shere: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

No flat figure would be honest, because every job differs.

Whether the motor has been running, and for how long, comes first in what shifts the price. How much AdBlue went in comes next, and then the location of the vehicle, because an open drive is simpler for our van to reach safely than a tight spot behind Shere Village Hall.

That is why every call from Shere starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what went in, how much, and if it's run.

Those replies turn a range into a straight price.

Priced by phone before the van sets out, the job is paid for that day — card or phone, nothing in advance.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

## Shere: still alongside the car?

Then, the best thing to do with the car is to not touch it.

Keys out; motor and ignition off.

Ring 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, roughly how much, and if it ran are all our engineers ask. Petrol in Diesel handles the remainder throughout Surrey, Shere included.
