# Why It Happens and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Sherford

Leave your motor and ignition off then ring 0333 366 0103 now — the rest can wait when AdBlue is already in your diesel tank.

Around Sherford, catching it before your motor runs normally leaves draining and a thorough flush where it stands.

The rest of this page explains why it occurs and how to ensure it doesn't — handy if you're reading before it has happened.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

Not one liquid but two: that's what plenty of modern diesels around Sherford and Combe carry, with diesel for the motor.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust gas to clean it.

Each tank has one filler of its own.

On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

At the pump, your diesel side gets filled all the time.

Much less often, the AdBlue side gets filled — normally from a bottle, by a person thinking about where it goes.

The mistake grows in that gap between the two.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank take place in Sherford?

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out completely, the vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Alto Road before work, or in the car park outside the pub in the village on the way home.

Then your car is new. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and your hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.

No part stops the pour after it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Whether it takes place in Blackpool or the middle of Sherford, it's the same few seconds.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Check these first, on a forecourt in Sherford or a driveway out in Elburton. A few seconds, no more.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap usually isn't. Read it instead of going by where it sits.

- Look at the size: the smaller neck is, on many vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- A label inside your fuel flap often says which fuel goes where, on plenty of vehicles. Look for it.

- The handbook. If the filler is not by your diesel cap, it's in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Whoever had it before will know. Check as you pick up a rental or company car — at Plymouth's car park, perhaps — not when the warning appears.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

When the light comes on, anywhere across Devon, follow this routine.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with your engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Sunbeam Close.

- Find the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and say the word "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew it. It seems daft. It does the trick.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the car on.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Shut the cap, and check once more — making sure your diesel filler stayed shut throughout. After that, start the car.

Find during the second or third stage that AdBlue went into the wrong tank? That's where you stop.

Stage five stays off limits.

## Sherford: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start your engine.

Don't switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Do not top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is sucked from.

Ask the attendants to help push the car away from the petrol pump if you're at a forecourt — the Valero, the Esso or anywhere else.

At home around Sherford? So your car remains where it is.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if the motor has already run.

Sherford lies under 50 miles from the M5; on it, take the first exit.

A short hop across Sherford is a smaller job than a run towards Plymouth, under 5 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## What happens when our engineers turn up around Sherford

Anywhere the car has stopped, whether by Sherford Vale School & Nursery, near Old railway building or on your own drive, our van travels to it.

We ask what got in, roughly how much, and if it has run, since the replies determine this work and our price.

During the phone call itself, you hear the price — before anything else.

Then that tank is cleared and the system cleaned thoroughly.

Much more than with petrol, it counts with AdBlue: the crystals build up, some metals are attacked, and nothing clears out on its own, no matter how long it sits.

The filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

Then we fire it up and check it runs properly before we leave.

If the motor has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Misfuelling cover is part of many insurance policies — so use the wait to check yours.
