# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Sherwood? Don't Start It

If AdBlue has got into your diesel tank, leave your engine off and keep your ignition off.

Water with urea mixed in it: that's AdBlue.

Not like fuel, it neither ignites nor blends, and no harm happens till your engine pulls it through.

If the motor has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally drained and thoroughly rinsed where the car sits around Sherwood.

No step comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

## Sherwood, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do straight away

To do:

- Keys out — that way nobody can switch anything on.

- Put the hazards on if you're at all near moving traffic.

- The empty bottle or the receipt tells us the fluid and the amount, so don't bin it out.

- The van finds you fastest with a postcode starting PR2 8, or just the name of a street close by, so phone from the spot.

Not to do:

- Not even for a second, and not to roll the car: your motor remains off.

- Your ignition remains off: on lots of diesels, switching it on is enough to run your pump.

- AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding more fuel won't weaken it.

- Never drive the car anywhere, not even a short stretch along St Francis Close.

- Don't try to drain the vehicle yourself at the roadside.

Rolling your car away from the pumps is a job for attendants to help with, wherever Sherwood forecourt you are on, the Asda or any other.

Parked on your own drive? Then it stays exactly where it is.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

Not your motor but the exhaust is where AdBlue is meant to go.

Stored in a separate tank, it is squirted into the exhaust to clean the fumes.

Neither side suits the other: urea doesn't belong in a pump, and a pump can't deal with urea.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, after tipped in, won't. Its behaviour is not at all like fuel's.

It sinks, because it's heavier than diesel, and settles low where the pickup draws its supply from.

A motor filled on a drive in Haighton Top yesterday evening and left unstarted counts as the simple one. No pump has pulled the AdBlue up yet — though once the engine turns, that's what is pulled first, straight from the bottom of your tank.

It does two kinds of harm from there.

What is left once the water goes is urea, which forms crystals: they settle in narrow channels and clog filters. On top of that, it attacks certain metals in a fuel system, and keeps going until it's cleared out.

A vehicle left standing in Sherwood with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank isn't.

The water in it causes damage of its own: your high-pressure pump and the injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is commonly more significant than petrol

Petrol pumped into a diesel on Esso's forecourt leaves the fuel watery — that is the main fault.

Mixed through the diesel and left unused, it is no threat at that stage; using your motor does the harm.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid as such is plainly the wrong one.

Not burning, it can't simply be run through.

Deposits and corrosion stay through the following tankful, and AdBlue separates again out of the diesel, so thinning it can't work. That is why the flush matters so much, and trying your engine "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than almost any other slip — in Nooklands or the centre of Sherwood equally.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Emptying a tank is the simplest part on a fuel system, and with no start-up, the AdBlue remains in there — anywhere across Lancashire the vehicle sits.

## Sherwood: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

It's not on purpose. Plenty of vehicles keep the AdBlue inlet alongside the diesel inlet, now and then under one flap, and muddling them up is easy after dark.

Usually it is not the filling station: a driver picks up a container heading home and pours it in at home.

The ways it happens are few and familiar.

Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside Sherwood Primary School the refill is hurried.

Close to Sherwood Way, a driver pours a bottle in at home in the evening.

Else, in dim light outside The Sherwood, your vehicle gets topped up by a driver opening that flap for the first time.

The least known vehicles get it most — hire cars, new cars, company cars, and the spare vehicle of a family with both fuels.

Keep it switched off: that's the first step to an identical slip, wherever around Sherwood or the remainder of Lancashire you happen to be.

## Started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank in Sherwood?

Then that tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

Given any running time, it travels to the injection pump and every injector, after passing through your filter and pipework.

Perhaps coming back from Masons Wood, or part way across Sherwood, the engine might run lumpy, smoke, lose pace, flash the dash or cut out.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart the car to check.

With each start, more of it is pulled through.

If you were on the Preston Bypass, under a mile from Sherwood, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere safe rather than pressing on.

How far it went matters. A couple of hundred yards across Sherwood to the car park by Fulwood Library is a very different job from a run towards Preston, under 3 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the system with every mile.

Let us know roughly how far it had come.

Wherever your car came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to flush after the motor has been run.

Caught soon, it very rarely leaves long-term damage.

## Sherwood: how AdBlue is cleared from a diesel

A street by Coroners Court, a drive, a lay-by or a filling station: wherever the vehicle has come to rest around Sherwood, our technicians come to it.

Three replies decide the job, and so first our engineers ask which fluid was put in, about the amount, and whether your motor has turned over.

The polluted diesel and the urea leave as one when your tank is emptied, right there.

Your system is cleaned thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own.

Next, your filter: flushed, or changed if it has to be. After that clean diesel, then a check of your vehicle.

If your engine has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once our technicians arrive.

Explosion-proof pumps make a busy forecourt sensible to work on, and they run quiet enough to spare the neighbours at night.

The final step is to prime the fuel system on new diesel.

You head off as soon as our engineers have started the engine, and it makes no difference whether the car is on a driveway around Sherwood or in a bay outside Preston.

Our technicians confirm it runs correctly on fresh diesel before we go.

The whole job is done where the car is, so it never has to go to a workshop.

You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report later, which is what insurers want.

## About Sherwood itself

Sherwood is a suburban area in Lancashire, situated on the riverside at an elevation of 49 metres, with semi-detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Sherwood lies close to the city of Preston, being only 2.1 miles away, and is near other places such as Fulwood Row and Sharoe Green. Sherwood is part of the larger urban area surrounding Preston, with Fulwood being a nearby suburb. Sherwood has a population of approximately 3326 residents.

## AdBlue drains across Sherwood and Lancashire

The vans that answer AdBlue call-outs around Sherwood also cover the locations around it, Fulwood Row, Sharoe Green and Fulwood among them, and most of Lancashire beyond, across the PR postcode area.

If you are near a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain, ring and ask rather than assuming.

No towing is needed. In Sherwood, a residential suburb, a mobile service works: the car is emptied on the spot, be it in a drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt.

## Sherwood: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Since the callouts differ, a single figure wouldn't be honest.

What shifts the price is, first of all, whether the motor has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue was put in; and after that where your car is and whether a technician can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight space behind Sharoe Green Library.

For that reason, every enquiry from Sherwood opens by asking the same trio — what was put in, how much, if it ran — before a figure.

With them, a range shrinks to a single fixed number.

You hear that price on the phone, before anyone heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

While our engineer is on the way, check your insurance: plenty cover misfuelling.

## Still next to the vehicle in Sherwood?

In that case, touch nothing — that's the best move available.

Engine off, keys out, ignition off.

Petrol in Diesel takes over the rest, in Sherwood or wherever within Lancashire, after you phone 0333 366 0103 to say it's AdBlue, roughly what quantity, and whether the engine ran.
