# How It Happens and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Shillinghill

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? Then set this page down a moment, leave your ignition and engine off, then call 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a full flush, carried out right where your car sits around Shillinghill, is usually all it takes if caught before your engine runs.

Not happened yet? Further down, the rest of the page explains the why it takes place and the how to avoid it for good.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank

No single fluid but two: that is how plenty of newer diesels near Shillinghill and Milnafua carry, with diesel feeding the engine.

The exhaust, not your motor, is where AdBlue goes: dosed into the fumes to clean it, from its own tank.

Separate tanks, different fillers.

Some motors keep the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; plenty of others place both together under one flap.

Filling your diesel side at the pump happens all the time.

Far less commonly, the AdBlue side is filled — normally from a bottle, by someone thinking about where it goes.

The mistake lives in that gap.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs in Shillinghill

Seldom is it carelessness: normally three things line up.

Haste follows from the warning. The car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank sends the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up happens in a rush, before work on a drive off Obsdale Road, or heading home in the car park outside the pub in the village.

New-to-you motors are second, as well. Hire cars, new motors and company cars put their fillers differently, and the hand goes for the cap used on the old one.

Nothing halts the tip after it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Whether it happens in Alness or the middle of Shillinghill, it is the same few seconds.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Whether a Shillinghill forecourt or a driveway over in Obsdale Park, spend a couple of seconds over these before any goes in.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally isn't. Read it instead of going by where it sits.

- Look at the size: the smaller neck is, on plenty of cars, the AdBlue one.

- Look inside your fuel flap: plenty of motors carry a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- The handbook shows which it is if your filler is not next to your diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park outside Alness, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

On the day the warning appears — anywhere you are across Highland — a routine to use.

- Stop somewhere level, engine off, with time in hand — not rushing on the side of B817.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once you find the AdBlue filler and read it. Daft, yes, but it does the trick.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Finish once that tank is topped up or the bottle is empty; before that, pour slowly using its built-in spout.

- Before you start the vehicle, close the cap and check a second time that your diesel cap never opened off.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Don't carry on to step five.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Shillinghill?

The short order of things, starting with not starting your motor.

On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so do not switch it on.

Topping up with diesel won't weaken it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the base of the tank, right where the fuel is taken from.

The staff at Morrisons, Gleaner or any forecourt will usually lend a hand pushing the vehicle away when asked.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own drive in Shillinghill.

When the engine has been run by now, stop somewhere safe then switch it off.

On the M90, over 50 miles from Shillinghill, that means the next junction.

About how far did it go? Crossing Shillinghill is smaller work than a trip of under 15 miles towards Inverness, and so tell us.

## When we get there around Shillinghill, what occurs?

Our van reaches your car anywhere it has come to rest — your own driveway, beside Alness War Memorial, or by the local primary school.

The answers determine the work and our price, and so our technicians ask what went in, about how much, and whether it's run.

On the phone call itself, you hear our quote — before anything else.

After that: draining, then a thorough flush of the entire system.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own.

A test comes at the end: before that, fresh diesel goes in, and the filter is flushed or changed if necessary.

We don't go until it has been started and is running correctly.

If your motor hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Nothing in advance; you settle up on the day. Afterwards, a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer are handed to you for your insurer.

While we travel, take a look at your policy; many carry cover for misfuelling.

There's no need to shift the car.

Anywhere it stands — beside Capstone Centre, in a layby heading to Alness Golf Club, on a drive — that's where it gets drained.
