# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Shipcote: Why It Occurs

Stop here a minute when your diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

Around Shipcote, catching it before the engine turns usually means draining and a full flush where it stands.

The rest of this page covers why it happens and how to ensure it doesn't — useful if you're reading before it has happened.

## AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

Many modern diesels on the roads around Shipcote and Carr Hill carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the motor.

The exhaust, not your motor, is where AdBlue goes: sprayed into the fumes to fresh it, from a separate tank.

Each tank comes with one filler of its own.

On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is topped up at the pump all the time.

The AdBlue side is filled far less frequently, normally from a bottle, and normally by a person who has to stop and think where it goes.

It is in that gap that the error lives.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Shipcote: how it takes place

It is seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

Haste comes from the warning. The vehicle warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up happens quickly, before work on a drive off Durham Road, or on the way home in the car park outside Gateshead Corporation Social Club.

Then, your hand goes for the cap it knew on the old motor — since a hire car, a new car or a company car places the fillers where your last one didn't.

Nothing halts the tip once it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Shipcote or out in Deckham.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Check these before pouring, at a forecourt around Shipcote or a drive out in Gateshead. A few seconds, no more.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap usually isn't. Read it instead of going by position.

- Look at the size: the smaller filler neck is, on many vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- A label inside your fuel flap frequently says which fuel goes where, on plenty of vehicles. Look for it.

- The handbook shows where it is when your filler is not next to your diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- Whoever had it before knows. Ask as you collect a rental or company car — from Newcastle's car park, perhaps — rather than once the light appears.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around Tyne and Wear that is.

- Not in a rush on the side of Northbourne Street, not on a slope, not with the engine running: park and switch off properly.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and say the word "AdBlue" aloud as unscrewing it. It seems daft. It does the trick.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave it on.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap, then check again — confirm your diesel cap stayed shut throughout. Only then, start the vehicle.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you have already poured into the diesel side.

Never carry on to step five.

## Shipcote: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Short order, then. First: the engine stays unstarted.

Don't switch your ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is pulled from.

Ask the attendants to help roll your car away from the petrol pump if you're at a forecourt — the Esso, the Shell or anywhere else.

At home around Shipcote? So your car remains where it is.

When your engine has run by now, stop safely then turn the car off.

Come off the Central Motorway East — under 3 miles out of Shipcote — at the next exit.

About how far did it go? Hopping across Shipcote is smaller a job than a trip of under 3 miles towards Newcastle upon Tyne, and so say.

## Shipcote: what occurs when we get there

Our technicians come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside South Street Community Primary School, close to Cenotaph or on your own drive.

Both the work and our price rest on three answers — which liquid, what quantity, and if it has run — so our engineers ask.

On the phone call itself, you are told our price — before anything else.

Draining your tank comes next, followed by a full flush of the fuel system.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and eats at certain fuel-system metals, and neither clears out by itself. That is why it counts more.

A test is last: before that, fresh diesel is added, and your filter is flushed or replaced as needed.

After that we start the engine and check it runs properly before we leave.

Most jobs are finished in about half an hour after our engineers get there, as long as your engine has not run — and the pumps our technicians use are safe on a busy forecourt yet quiet after dark beside a house.

Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you are given the documents an insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

While we travel, take a look at your policy; plenty include cover for misfuelling.

## AdBlue drains across Tyne and Wear, Shipcote included

Mount Pleasant and Saltwell are among the towns around Shipcote, a residential suburb, that the same teams cover, throughout NE postcodes.

A postcode starting NE8 4 gets the van to you fastest.

The vehicle does not need to shift.

The drain takes place right there, be it a drive, a road near St George's Church, or a layby on the way to Avondale Park.

Awkward to explain, like the back of Shipley Art Gallery? By a border? Asking is better than assuming, so ring.

## The short version for Shipcote motorists

Always, the cap; then, the tip.

Petrol in Diesel drains it on the spot, anywhere across Tyne and Wear, if AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank anyway — and so leave it off then phone 0333 366 0103.
