# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Shipton Bellinger: How It Happens and How to Stop It

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the motor and the ignition off then call 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your motor runs, it is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Shipton Bellinger.

If you're reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it doesn't.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

Diesel goes to the motor — but many current diesels seen about Shipton Bellinger and Tidworth hold a second liquid as well.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into the exhaust gas and cleans it.

Each tank has a filler of its own.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

Topping up the diesel side at the petrol pump happens constantly.

Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes usually fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less regularly.

The error lives in that gap.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Shipton Bellinger: how it happens

It is hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

Haste follows from the warning. The vehicle tells you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank puts it into limp mode — so the top-up gets done in a rush, before work on a drive off High Street, or on the way home in the car park at The Boot Inn.

Unfamiliar cars are next, as well. Rentals, new vehicles and company motors place their fillers differently, and the hand goes for the cap it used on the old one.

No part stops the tip after it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Tidworth Camp or the middle of Shipton Bellinger: it takes the same few seconds either way.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

A couple of seconds is all these take — so check them before you pour anything, on a driveway in Racedown or a forecourt around Shipton Bellinger.

- Blue and marking: an AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally doesn't. Trust the cap, not where it sits.

- On plenty of vehicles, size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Many cars say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If the filler is not by your diesel cap, it's in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park outside Grateley, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in Hampshire that is.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Watery Lane.

- Daft as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew the cap does the trick — after you've located the filler and read it.

- Both behind one flap? So make sure the lid on your diesel filler is still shut before raising the bottle.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap, and check again — confirm the diesel filler remained closed throughout. After that, start the car.

Discover at the second or third step that the bottle went into the diesel filler? That's where you stop.

Stage five is out.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Shipton Bellinger?

Brief list, then. First: the motor stays unstarted.

The fuel pump runs on plenty of diesels as soon as the ignition goes on — so leave it off.

Topping up with diesel won't thin it: rather than mixing, AdBlue sinks to the base of your tank, just where fuel is drawn from.

If you are at a forecourt, whether it is the Esso or the Murco, ask the attendants to help roll the vehicle away from the petrol pump.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive around Shipton Bellinger.

Already run? Stop when it is safe, then turn off.

On the M4, under 25 miles from Shipton Bellinger, that means the next exit.

Roughly how far did it go? Crossing Shipton Bellinger is less work than a trip of under 15 miles towards Salisbury, and so tell us.

## What occurs when we arrive in Shipton Bellinger

Anywhere your car came to rest, be it by Shipton Bellinger Primary School, beside St Peter's Church or at home, our van comes to it.

Which liquid got in, the amount, and whether it ran: we ask because those answers set the work and quote.

During the phone call itself, you hear the price — before anything else.

Emptying your tank comes next, followed by a full flush of the fuel system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why that matters more with AdBlue than with petrol.

Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

We do not leave until it has been fired up and is running properly.

If your motor hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Your insurer will ask for an engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and both are yours once the job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no deposit.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours while we're on the way.

Shifting the car is not needed.

Wherever it sits — near Tedworth House, on a layby en route to Shipton Road Plantation, at home — that's where it gets cleared.

Assuming won't help at the back of Assaye House, on a boundary, or anywhere awkward to describe; ring and ask.
