# Shiremoor: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

Engine off, ignition off: that's where you begin if AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank.

Water with urea mixed in it: that is AdBlue.

As it is water-based, it won't burn and never combines with diesel; damage only starts once your pump begins drawing it.

If your motor hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually emptied and thoroughly rinsed where the vehicle sits around Shiremoor.

No step comes before ringing 0333 366 0103.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Shiremoor: the first few minutes

Things to do:

- Pocket the keys, which prevents anyone turning the electrics on.

- If you are anywhere near moving traffic, put your hazards on.

- Which product, and roughly what quantity? Save the bottle or the till receipt, and our technicians can see.

- Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting NE27 0, or the name of the nearest street, gets the van to you without a search.

Not to do:

- Don't start the motor, even for a moment to shift the car.

- Many diesels run their pump the moment the ignition comes on, so keep the vehicle off.

- No extra fuel on top. The AdBlue will not blend, and so it's wasted.

- Keep the vehicle where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short distance along Lower Crone Street.

- Do not try to drain the car yourself at the kerbside.

Rolling your car off the island is a job for attendants to help with, whichever Shiremoor forecourt you're on, the BP or any other.

Stopped on your own driveway? Then it remains exactly as it is.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

The engine is not what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is.

From a separate reservoir it goes straight to your exhaust, cleaning what your motor emits.

Not one side fits the other: urea does not belong in an injection pump, and an injection pump can't deal with urea.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, once poured in, won't. Its behaviour is not at all like diesel's.

It's heavier than diesel, so it sinks and collects at the bottom of the tank, which is where the pickup pulls fuel from.

The first thing your fuel system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a car that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Murton last night, and has not been started since, is still the simple case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of the tank, and nothing has pulled it in.

It does two kinds of damage from there.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps working on the components it hits for as long as it stays there.

A car left standing in Shiremoor with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank is not.

Diesel protects the injection pump and every injector as it flows; water gives none of that, and that is a second form of damage.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is frequently more serious than petrol

Fill a diesel with petrol in error at the eg, and the problem is diluted fuel.

No harm is done as long as it sits unused, blended into your diesel — only once your engine works on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is another problem: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all.

It does not burn, so it can't simply be run through.

Nor can it be thinned, because it splits again — and the following tankful won't clear away crystals or corrosion. So the flush matters more with AdBlue, and turning the key "to see", in the centre of Shiremoor or out in Backworth, costs more than almost any other error.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Never started? Then the AdBlue waits only in your tank, the easiest bit of the entire system to clear, anywhere your car has come to rest in Tyne and Wear.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Shiremoor

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many vehicles sits right next to your diesel filler, occasionally under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

It mostly occurs at home, from a container bought en route home, not at the forecourt.

Usually, it takes place in one of a few familiar ways.

Rushing, outside Shiremoor Primary School, after a warning light came on during the school run, a parent tops up your car.

Someone pours the container in outside their house, right off Earsdon Road, as the day ends.

Or someone unfamiliar with that flap tops up the vehicle after dark, stopped in the car park outside Grey Horse.

It crops up the most in a hire car, a brand-new car, a company motor, or the spare vehicle of a home with one of each fuels — the cars people use least.

Anywhere around Tyne and Wear, Shiremoor included, the mistake doesn't change, and nor does the first step: keep it switched off.

## Already started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Shiremoor?

Then the AdBlue has left the tank.

Through the fuel filter, through the pipework, and — with any running — on to the injection pump and every injector: that's where it travels.

Perhaps returning from Backworth Golf Club, or midway across Shiremoor, the motor may run lumpy, smoke, lose power, flash the dash or stall.

Pull over when it is safe. Turn off. Leave the vehicle off rather than testing it again.

Each start pulls more of that through.

On the A167(M), under 10 miles from Shiremoor, the next junction is where to leave, and anywhere sensible is where to park — not driving on.

How far it went matters. A few hundred yards across Shiremoor to the car park by Shiremoor Library is a very different job from a run towards Newcastle upon Tyne, under 10 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with each mile.

About how far it had come is worth telling us.

Our technicians do all of the flushing where the vehicle has come to a stop, and once your engine has been run there is more of it.

Lasting damage is very uncommon if it is spotted early.

## Clearing AdBlue in a diesel in Shiremoor: what it takes

The car remains where it is, whether that is a street beside The Salvation Army - Shiremoor, a driveway, a lay-by or a forecourt around Shiremoor, and the van travels to it.

Before anything else we ask what was put in, roughly how much, and if the engine has run, because those answers decide the work.

The contaminated diesel and the urea leave as one when the tank is emptied, right there.

With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, flushing matters: the fuel system is flushed right through because residue won't wash away unaided.

After that, the fuel filter: flushed, or replaced if it has to be. Then clean diesel, then a check of the vehicle.

Engine not run? In that case expect roughly half an hour once we are there for most jobs.

Quiet enough for use outside a house at night, and fine on a working forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

Bleeding your system with new diesel comes at the end.

Starting it comes next, and then you drive off from where your car is parked, at Seaton Delaval or on a driveway around Shiremoor.

We make sure it runs properly on new diesel before leaving.

Because the job is done in its entirety where the vehicle is, a garage never comes into it.

You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report later, which is what insurers want.

Shiremoor sits at an elevation of 52 metres, with semi-detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Shiremoor is close to nearby places such as Earsdon, West Holywell, and East Holywell, and is located about 250 miles north of London. Shiremoor has a population of around 1788 residents.

## AdBlue drains across Shiremoor and Tyne and Wear

Earsdon, West Holywell and East Holywell are among the places around Shiremoor that the same vans serve, together with most of Tyne and Wear beyond, throughout the NE postcode area.

Ring and check instead of guessing if you are close to a border, or somewhere awkward to pin down.

A mobile service suits Shiremoor, a coastal village: there's no need to bring your vehicle to us, because our engineers drain it on the spot, in a driveway, a side street, a parking area or a filling station.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Shiremoor: the cost of fixing it

There's no honest single price, because the jobs are not the same.

The price changes first with how long, if at all, the motor has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that was put in. After that it rests on where your car is and whether a van can get to it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight space behind St Alban.

That is why each call from Shiremoor starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what went in, how much, and if it's run.

When they are known, a range becomes one firm figure.

Before anyone heads out, you are told the price by phone. Then payment is on the day, card or by phone, with nothing in advance.

While our engineer is travelling, check your policy: many include misfuelling.

## Beside the car in Shiremoor, still?

In that case, touch nothing — that is the most helpful step there is.

Ignition off, motor off, keys out.

Phone 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, roughly how much, plus whether the engine ran is everything our technicians ask. Petrol in Diesel takes over the remainder throughout Tyne and Wear, Shiremoor included.
