# Shitterton: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

Pause here a minute when the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, then phone 0333 366 0103.

In Shitterton, catching it before your engine runs normally leaves a drain and a thorough flush where it stands.

Nothing happened yet? Further down, the rest of the page covers the reasons it occurs and the how to prevent it altogether.

## AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

Plenty of newer diesels in Throop, as well as Shitterton, run on two liquids; the engine gets just the diesel.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust gas to clean it.

There's a filler on each tank.

On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

At the pump, your diesel side gets filled all the time.

Much less regularly, the AdBlue side gets topped up — mostly from a bottle, by a person working out where it goes.

The error lives in that gap.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs in Shitterton

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the car goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Roke Road before work, or in the car park outside Drax Arms on the way home.

Unfamiliar cars come next, as well. Rentals, new vehicles and company vehicles place their fillers in new places, and habit reaches for the cap it used on the old one.

No part stops the tip once it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Whether it happens in Bere Regis or the middle of Shitterton, it's the same few seconds.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Before you pour anything, whether on a driveway in Lane End or a forecourt in Shitterton, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Colour and marking: an AdBlue cap is often blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually doesn't. Trust the cap, not its position.

- Plenty of motors fit AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Plenty of cars say there which fuel goes where.

- Can't find it beside the diesel inlet? Then look below the bonnet or inside the boot — the handbook will say which.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Wool.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

When the light goes on, anywhere in Dorset, follow this routine.

- Stop on level, engine off, with time to spare — not hurried on the side of West Street.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once finding the AdBlue filler and reading it. Silly, perhaps, yet it works.

- The diesel cap remains on. Where the two sit under a flap, make sure it's closed before lifting the bottle.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Before starting the vehicle, shut the cap and look a second time that the diesel cap was never came off.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you've already poured into the diesel side.

Stage five stays off limits.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Shitterton?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start the engine.

Leave your ignition off too, since on plenty of diesels it alone starts your pump.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is sucked from — so do not top up with diesel to dilute it.

On a forecourt — Shell, BP or another — the attendants will normally help roll the car away, when you ask.

If you're on your own driveway in Shitterton, leave the car where it sits.

When the engine has been run by now, pull over somewhere safe then switch the vehicle off.

The next junction means the place to leave if you're on the M27, under 50 miles from Shitterton.

Distance matters — a quick hop across Shitterton makes a smaller job than driving under 50 miles to Salisbury — so tell us about how far it went.

## Shitterton: what takes place when we get there

Our engineers come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside Bere Regis Primary and Preschool, near Congregational Chapel or on your own driveway.

Those answers decide this work and our quote, and so our engineers ask what went in, about how much, and whether it's run.

No one heads out before you've had our price by phone.

Draining your tank comes next, then a thorough flush of the fuel system.

More than with petrol, it matters with AdBlue: the crystals form, certain metals are attacked, and nothing clears away on its own, however long it sits.

A test is at the end: before that, clean diesel is added, and the fuel filter is flushed or replaced if necessary.

We do not leave until it has been fired up and is running correctly.

Using pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs in which your engine has not run take about half an hour after our technicians are there.

No money in advance; you settle up on the day. At the end, a VAT invoice and the report from the engineer are handed to you for the insurer.

It's worth looking at your policy as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover is included with many policies.

## AdBlue drains around Shitterton, and Dorset beyond

Being a rural hamlet, Shitterton has the same vans as surrounding places — Hollow Oak, Turners Puddle — right across BH postcodes and the wider area around them.

A postcode starting BH20 7 gets our van to you fastest.

No need to shift your car.

We drain it where it is — a side street near St John the Baptist, a lay-by on the way to Mays Wood, a driveway.

Assuming doesn't help behind Bere Regis Village Hall, on a border, or anywhere awkward to pin down; ring and check.

## In short, for Shitterton drivers

Before you pour, read the cap.

AdBlue in the diesel tank regardless? Keep the vehicle switched off and phone 0333 366 0103; Petrol in Diesel empties it on the spot, throughout Dorset.
