# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Shore Edge: How It Occurs and How to Avoid It

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the engine and the ignition off then phone 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your engine runs, it is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Shore Edge.

Not happened yet? Below, the rest of the page covers the why it takes place and the ways to prevent it altogether.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Diesel feeds your motor — yet many modern diesels seen about Shore Edge and Lane Side carry a second fluid too.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into the exhaust stream and cleans it.

Different tanks, separate fillers.

On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel goes in at each forecourt call-out, week in, week out.

A driver who has to stop and work out where it goes normally fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less regularly.

The mistake grows in the gap between them.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank take place in Shore Edge?

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out completely, the car drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Buckstones Road before work, or in the car park outside Black Ladd on the way home.

Then the vehicle is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and the hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Third, the spout fits: a diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it goes in just as easily, and once the tip begins, nothing halts it.

It takes a few seconds, be it out in Black Clough or bang in the centre of Shore Edge.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Look at these first, on a forecourt around Shore Edge or a drive out in Dog Hill. A few seconds, no more.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally isn't. Read it rather than going by where it sits.

- Look at the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of cars, the AdBlue one.

- A label inside the fuel flap often says which fuel goes where, on many motors. Look for it.

- Cannot find it beside the diesel filler? In that case check beneath the bonnet or inside the boot — the handbook will say where.

- Whoever had it before knows. Check as you collect a hire car or fleet car — at Rochdale's car park, say — not once the light appears.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across Greater Manchester that is.

- Pull in on level, engine off, with time in hand — never rushing on the side of Hillside Avenue.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after finding the AdBlue filler and reading it. Silly, yes, yet it does the trick.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Gently is best, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.

Find at stage two or three that it's already gone into your diesel side? So stop right there.

Leave out step five entirely.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, in Shore Edge?

Brief list, then. Top of it: the motor remains unstarted.

On many diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so don't switch it on.

Filling up with diesel won't dilute it: rather than mixing, AdBlue sinks to the base of your tank, just where the fuel is taken from.

At a forecourt — Shell, Red Rose Filling Station or any other — the staff will usually help roll the car clear, if you ask.

If you're on your own drive around Shore Edge, leave it where it sits.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if your motor has already run.

The next exit means the place to come off if you're on the M62, under 3 miles from Shore Edge.

About how far did it go? Hopping across Shore Edge is less work than a trip of under 15 miles towards Manchester, so say.

## Our arrival in Shore Edge, and what takes place next

The van comes to the vehicle wherever it has come to rest — your own driveway, near Shore Edge Methodist Church, or outside Buckstones Primary School.

Both the work and the quote depend on three replies — what fluid, which amount, and whether it's run — so our technicians ask.

That price is given over the phone, ahead of any van leaving.

Then your tank is emptied and your system flushed thoroughly.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush matters more here than with petrol.

A test comes last: before that, clean diesel goes in, and the fuel filter is cleaned or replaced as needed.

The motor is started next and tested to confirm it runs correctly, all before our technicians go.

If the motor has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Paying is on the day, not upfront, and you are given the documents your insurer asks for: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

It is worth checking your insurance while we travel to you: misfuelling cover is included with many policies.
