# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Shottermill: How It Happens and How to Prevent It

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the motor and the ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103.

Around Shottermill, catching it before your engine runs usually leaves a drain and a full flush where it stands.

The remainder of this page explains why it happens and how to ensure it doesn't — useful if you're reading before it has happened.

## AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

Plenty of newer diesels in Camelsdale, like those in Shottermill, run on two fluids; the engine takes only your diesel.

AdBlue's own tank holds it, and from there it is sent to the exhaust, and there spraying cleans the gas.

Each tank has its own filler.

On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

Filling the diesel side at the pump happens constantly.

Seldom topped up, AdBlue usually goes in from a bottle, poured by someone who has to stop and think what filler it needs.

It is in the gap that the slip happens.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Shottermill: how it takes place

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

On a drive off Oak Cottages before work, or in the car park at The Mill on the way home: that's where the hurried top-up takes place. Why the rush? As AdBlue gets low the car warns you, and once it's empty, limp mode follows.

Then the vehicle is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the pour once it has started.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Shottermill or out in Critchmere.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Be it a Shottermill forecourt or a drive over in Hammer Bottom, spend a few seconds over these before anything is poured in.

- Where it sits misleads; the cap doesn't. AdBlue ones are often blue or bear the name "AdBlue" — diesel caps usually do not.

- On plenty of cars, the size gives it away: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- Open the filler flap and look for a label — many motors mark what goes in each inlet right there.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that is where your filler is if it is not by your diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Haslemere.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

For the day the light comes on — anywhere it is around Surrey — a routine to follow.

- Pull in somewhere level, engine off, with time to spare — never hurried on the side of Dolphin Close.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" out loud as unscrewing it. It seems daft. It does the trick.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave it on.

- Gently does it, through the bottle's own spout, till it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Before starting the car, close the cap and check a second time that your diesel cap never came off.

Spot at step two or three that it has already gone into the diesel side? So stop right there.

Never go on to step five.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, in Shottermill?

What follows is a short order of things, starting with not starting the motor.

Leave the ignition off too, since on many diesels switching it on by itself runs your pump.

Filling up with diesel will not dilute it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the base of the tank, just where fuel is taken from.

At a forecourt — Arnolds Garage, Asda Express or any other — the staff will usually help push your car away, when you ask.

If you're on your own drive around Shottermill, leave the car where it sits.

Already run? Stop once it is safe, then turn off.

On the M3, under 15 miles from Shottermill, that means the next junction.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Chichester, under 25 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Shottermill.

## Shottermill: what takes place when we turn up

By Shottermill Junior School, near St Stephen's Church or on your own driveway: wherever your car has stopped, we come to it.

Both the work and our quote depend on three replies — which liquid, which amount, and whether it's run — so our engineers ask.

On the phone call itself, you hear our price — before anything else.

Your system is then purged thoroughly, once your tank is drained.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush counts more here than with petrol.

Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

Then we start the engine and check it runs correctly before leaving.

Most jobs are finished in roughly half an hour after our technicians get there, as long as the motor hasn't run — and the pumps our engineers use are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet at night beside a house.

Payment is on the day, not upfront, and you receive the documents your insurer wants: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

While we travel, take a look at your policy; plenty include cover for misfuelling.
