# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Shotts? Keep It Switched Off

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, your ignition stays off and so does the engine.

Urea dissolved in water is all AdBlue is.

Unlike fuel, it neither ignites nor mixes, and no harm starts till your engine sucks it round.

If the motor hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally drained and thoroughly flushed where your car stands around Shotts.

Nothing comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank around Shotts

Do these:

- Keys out — that way nobody can switch anything on.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all near.

- Which fluid, and about how much quantity? Save the bottle or your receipt, and we can see.

- Ring just where you are. Quote a ML7 4 postcode or the nearest street name, and nobody has to search for you.

Do not do these:

- Not even for a second, and not to roll your car: the engine stays off.

- Switching your key to ignition alone starts your pump going on many diesels. Skip it.

- AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding more diesel will not weaken it.

- Even a short way up Currieside Avenue is too far to drive the vehicle.

- By the road, do not attempt draining it yourself.

Rolling the vehicle away from the pumps is a job for staff to help with, wherever Shotts forecourt you are on, the Shell included.

At home, the car remains exactly where it is.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

The engine isn't what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is.

From a separate tank it goes directly to the exhaust, cleaning what the motor lets out.

Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is built to handle it.

It doesn't combine. Once it's tipped into a tank of diesel, AdBlue acts nothing like diesel.

Denser than diesel, it drops and pools underneath it — the very spot the intake draws from.

Once your pump runs, the AdBlue is top of the list to be pulled through. Before then it waits underneath the diesel, which is how a vehicle filled in Stane last night and not started stays the simple one, as long as no one touches your key.

Once it's sucked in, the damage comes in two forms.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps working on the components it reaches for as long as it remains there.

A motor left standing around Shotts with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank is not.

Diesel protects the high-pressure pump and every injector as it passes; water offers no lubrication, and that is a separate form of damage.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is regularly more serious than petrol

Top up a diesel with petrol by mistake over at the another forecourt nearby, and the problem is thinned fuel.

Harm just comes from running on it. Mixed into your diesel and sitting inside your tank, it causes none.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid itself is plainly the wrong one.

It does not burn, and so it cannot just be run through.

Nor can it be watered down, since it splits back out — and the next tankful will not rinse away crystals or corrosion. So the flush matters more here, and turning the key "to see", in the centre of Shotts or out in Torbothie, does more harm than nearly any other slip.

The same good news applies as with petrol.

Emptying a tank is the easiest job on a fuel system, and without start-up, the AdBlue stays in it — anywhere in North Lanarkshire the car sits.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Shotts: how it ends up there

Plenty of cars place the AdBlue filler alongside the diesel cap, now and then under a single flap, and after dark the two can appear identical. Nobody means it.

A container picked up when heading home and poured in at home, rather than at the forecourt, is the usual story.

Mostly, it occurs in one of a few familiar ways.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up happens in a hurry outside the local primary school.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Regal Grove.

Or someone new to that flap refills the car in dim light, parked in the car park outside The Old Wine Store.

It comes up the most in a rental, a brand-new motor, a fleet car, or the spare vehicle in a family with one of each fuel types — the vehicles drivers know least.

Anywhere in North Lanarkshire, Shotts as well, the mistake doesn't change, and neither does the first step: leave it off.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Shotts, and your engine started?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer inside that tank.

With any running, it goes on to the injection pump and each injector, having passed through the filter and pipework.

You may notice the engine running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, possibly on the way back from Stane Gardens or halfway across Shotts.

Once safe, stop and switch it off — with no restarting to test.

More of it is pulled through with each start.

Leave the M8, under 3 miles from Shotts, by the first junction and park safely, rather than driving on.

How far it went counts. A couple of hundred yards across Shotts to the car park by St Patricks Church is a very different job from a run towards Glasgow, under 25 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the fuel system with every mile.

Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

There is more to rinse out once your engine has run, and our technicians do all of it where your car has stopped.

Caught soon, it very seldom leaves permanent damage.

## What clearing AdBlue from a diesel involves in Shotts

Anywhere it has stopped in Shotts — a forecourt, a lay-by, a driveway, a street beside Shotts Calderhead-Erskine Parish — our van comes to your car.

Which fluid went in, about how much, plus whether your motor has turned over: our engineers ask before all else, because those shape the job.

On the spot, that tank is then drained, and all of the contaminated diesel and the urea leave as one.

What remains from AdBlue will not wash away unaided, so the whole system gets a careful flush, which counts much more with urea than with petrol.

The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

The majority of these jobs are a half-hour job once we get there, if the motor has not run.

Explosion-proof pumps make a live forecourt sensible to work on, and they run quiet enough to spare the neighbours at night.

Last, your system is bled with new diesel.

After that our technicians fire it up and you set off, whether from a parking space outside the nearest station or a driveway around Shotts.

It is tested on new diesel to be sure it runs correctly before our technicians leave.

No workshop is needed at any stage, with the entire job done then and there.

At the end, you are given the paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice and a written report from the engineer.

Near a border, or somewhere tricky to explain? Asking is better than guessing, so phone.

No towing is needed. In Shotts, a village, a van that comes to you works: the vehicle is drained on the spot, whether in a driveway, a side street, a parking area or a filling station.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Shotts: the cost of fixing it

Because each callouts differ, a flat figure would not be honest.

Three things move the price: whether your engine has run and for how long, how much AdBlue went in, and where the car is. That last one rests on whether our van can reach it safely, and an open driveway is simpler than a tight space behind Shotts Community Education Centre.

That is why every call from Shotts starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what was put in, how much, and if it's run.

When those are known, a range becomes a single fixed number.

The quote is quoted during the call, before anyone sets off; settling up happens on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

Misfuelling cover is part of many insurance policies, so it pays to look at yours before the van arrives.

## Next to the vehicle in Shotts, still?

In that case, do nothing — that is the most helpful move there is.

Motor off, keys out, ignition off.

Phone 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, roughly how much, and if the engine ran is all our technicians ask. Petrol in Diesel handles the remainder throughout North Lanarkshire, Shotts too.
