# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Showfield: Why It Happens

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and your ignition off and call 0333 366 0103.

A drain plus a thorough flush, done right where your car stands around Showfield, is normally what it takes if caught before your engine runs.

The rest of this page covers why it occurs and how to make sure it does not — handy if you are reading ahead of time.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

No single liquid but two: that's what many newer diesels near Showfield and Keighley carry, with diesel for your engine.

AdBlue's own tank holds it, and from there it goes to the exhaust, where spraying cleans the fumes.

Every tank comes with one filler of its own.

On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is fuelled at the petrol pump all the time.

Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes usually tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less regularly.

The slip lives in that gap.

## Showfield: how AdBlue in your diesel tank occurs

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a warning from the vehicle, and letting it run dry means limp mode — hence a hurried top-up, perhaps before work off East Avenue, or at The Livery Rooms on the way home that evening.

The old car's filler is where the hand reaches — yet a rental car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers somewhere else. That is a second factor: a strange car.

Lastly, the bottle fits: a diesel filler or AdBlue one, it slides in as easily, and after the pour starts, no part stops it.

Lawkholme or the middle of Showfield: it is the same few seconds either way.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Before you pour anything, whether on a driveway in Utley or a forecourt around Showfield, check these. They take a few seconds.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually isn't. Read it rather than going by position.

- The size. On many cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Check inside your fuel flap: plenty of cars have a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that's where your filler is if it's not by the diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Keighley.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

On the day the light appears — wherever it is in West Yorkshire — a simple routine to use.

- Turn off after you park — flat ground, engine stopped, and not rushed by Cark Road at the roadside.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and speak the word "AdBlue" aloud while unscrewing it. It sounds daft. It does the trick.

- The diesel cap stays on. When both sit under a flap, confirm it's shut before the bottle comes up.

- Slowly is best, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle runs out.

- Only after that, start your car: close the cap, check again, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Stage five is out.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, in Showfield?

Don't start your engine: that's how the short order of things begins.

Keep the ignition off as well, because on plenty of diesels it by itself runs your fuel pump.

Don't top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is drawn from.

If you're at a forecourt, whether it's the Shell or the Texaco, ask the staff to help push the car away from the petrol pump.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own drive around Showfield.

If your engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

Leave the M606 — under 10 miles out of Showfield — at the next junction.

Mileage matters — a quick hop across Showfield is a smaller job than driving under 10 miles to Bradford — so tell us roughly how far it went.

## When our technicians turn up in Showfield, what occurs?

Our technicians come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside St Anne's Catholic Primary School, near Muhammadi Masjid or on your own driveway.

What fluid went in, the amount, and whether it ran: our technicians ask since those answers decide both work and price.

Nobody sets off until you've had our price by phone.

After that: a drain, then a thorough flush of the whole system.

More than with petrol, it counts with AdBlue: the crystals build up, certain metals are attacked, and nothing washes out unaided, no matter how long it sits.

Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

We don't go until it has been fired up and is running properly.

Most jobs are finished in roughly half an hour once our engineers get there, provided the motor hasn't run — and the pumps our technicians use are safe on a live forecourt and quiet at night outside a house.

Your insurer usually wants the engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and both are yours once this job is done. Payment is on the day, with no money upfront.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours while we're on the way.

If you are near a border, or somewhere hard to describe like the back of Ghousia Mosque, ring and ask rather than guessing.

## Showfield motorists: the short version

First, the cap; then, the pour.
