# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Shuttlewood? Keep It Switched Off

If AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank, leave your motor off then leave the ignition off.

Urea dissolved in water is what AdBlue is.

Not like fuel, it neither burns nor blends, and nothing starts until the motor pulls it round.

If the motor has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually drained and thoroughly rinsed where the vehicle sits around Shuttlewood.

Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank around Shuttlewood

To do:

- Remove the keys, which prevents anyone switching the power on.

- If you're at all close to moving traffic, put the hazards on.

- Hold on to the receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what got in and roughly how much.

- The van finds you fastest with a postcode starting S44 6, or simply the name of a street nearby, and so call from the spot.

Not to do:

- Moving your vehicle even a short way is no reason to fire up your motor.

- Many diesels run their pump the instant your ignition goes on, so leave it off.

- Adding more diesel doesn't work: AdBlue settles out instead of thinning.

- Leave it where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short distance along Field View.

- Do not try to drain it yourself at the roadside.

At a forecourt in Shuttlewood, whether it is the Shell or another one, ask the staff to help you push the vehicle away from the petrol pump.

On your own drive, don't move it at all.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

The motor is not what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is.

Stored in a dedicated tank, it is injected into the exhaust to treat the fumes.

Nothing in an injection pump is designed for this liquid — and none of it was meant to travel through one.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, after poured in, won't. Its behaviour is not at all like diesel's.

It sinks, because it's denser than diesel, and pools down where the intake takes its fuel from.

The first thing the system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a vehicle that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Oxcroft last night, and has not been started since, is still the easy case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of the tank, and nothing has pulled it in.

Once it is drawn in, the harm comes in two forms.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water evaporates, it strands urea that hardens in filters and narrow passages; and, since it attacks certain metals, each part it touches suffers for as long as it remains inside.

A vehicle left standing around Shuttlewood with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank is not.

Diesel lubricates the injection pump and every injector as it passes; water offers no lubrication, and that is a second form of damage.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel commonly the bigger fault?

Petrol pumped into a diesel on Texaco's forecourt leaves the fuel watery — that's the whole problem.

No harm comes while it sits put, blended into your diesel — only once your motor runs on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different problem: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all.

It cannot simply be run through, since it does not burn.

Deposits and corrosion stay after the following tankful, and AdBlue separates back out of the diesel, and so thinning it can't work. Hence the flush counts more, and turning the key "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than nearly any other mistake — in Limekiln Field or the heart of Shuttlewood equally.

As with petrol, there is good news.

Wherever in Derbyshire the car has come to rest, an unstarted motor leaves the AdBlue yet in the tank: the simplest part of any fuel system to clear.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Shuttlewood: how it ends up there

Many vehicles put the AdBlue filler alongside the diesel cap, occasionally under a single flap, and after dark the two can look identical. No one means it.

Mostly it's not the forecourt: a driver buys a bottle driving home and tips it in outside the house.

A few familiar ways cover the majority of them.

Rushing, outside Brockley Primary School, after a warning light flashed on during the school run, someone refills your car.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Chesterfield Road.

Otherwise, in dim light outside the pub in the village, your car is topped up by a driver using that flap the first time.

The least familiar vehicles get it the most — hire cars, new ones, company cars, and the other vehicle in a family with both fuels.

Same mistake, same first step — keep it switched off — wherever you are in Shuttlewood or the rest of Derbyshire.

## Already started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Shuttlewood?

The AdBlue has left the tank, then.

Via the fuel filter, along the lines, and — with any running time — on to the high-pressure pump and each injector: that is where it travels.

You may see the engine running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, possibly on the way back from Stanfree Park or halfway across Shuttlewood.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart the car to check.

Every start pulls more of it through.

On the M1, under a mile from Shuttlewood, the first junction is where to leave, and anywhere sensible is where to park — not carrying on.

How far it went matters. A few hundred yards across Shuttlewood to the car park by Bolsover Castle is a very different job from a run towards Sheffield, under 15 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the system with each mile.

Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

Once the engine has run, the flush takes in more, and all of it is done where your car has come to a stop.

When it is noticed quickly, lasting damage is very rare.

## Clearing AdBlue in a diesel around Shuttlewood: what it takes

The vehicle stays where it is, whether that's a road beside Bolsover Assembly Hall, a driveway, a layby or a forecourt around Shuttlewood, and our van travels to it.

Before anything else our engineers ask what went in, roughly how much, and whether the motor has run, because those answers decide the work.

Then the tank is emptied where the vehicle stands, and so the contaminated fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

What remains from AdBlue won't wash away by itself, and so the whole system gets a careful flush, which counts far more here than for petrol.

The filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

If your motor has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we arrive.

The equipment is explosion-proof, so a live forecourt is no issue, and it's hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

Fresh diesel goes in to bleed the system, and that is the last step.

Whether it is a parking bay at Creswell or a drive in Shuttlewood, that is where our technicians start the car and you head off.

Before we go, we check it is running correctly with clean diesel in.

The whole job is done where the vehicle is, so it never has to be taken to a workshop.

The insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — both yours once the job is done.

## Shuttlewood and Derbyshire: AdBlue drains across the area

Throughout the S postcode area, the teams taking AdBlue call-outs in Shuttlewood reach much of Derbyshire too, Bolsover Woodhouse, Oxcroft Estate and Stanfree included.

Assuming doesn't help close to a county line or somewhere tricky to pin down; ring and ask.

A van that comes to you suits Shuttlewood, a village: there's no need to take the car to us, since our technicians empty it on the spot, on a driveway, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Shuttlewood: the cost of fixing it

Each job differs, so no single quote is honest.

What changes the price is, firstly, whether your engine has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue went in; and finally where the car is and whether a technician can reach it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight gap behind Peter Fidler Memorial Cairn.

That's why every call from Shuttlewood starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what got in, how much, and whether it has run.

Those replies turn a range into a straight price.

Our price is quoted on the call, before anyone sets off; payment happens on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

As our engineer is on the way, check your insurance: many include misfuelling.

## In Shuttlewood and still alongside the car?

Right now, the most helpful thing to do with the vehicle is to not touch it.

Keys out; engine and ignition off.

Ring 0333 366 0103 then tell us it's AdBlue, roughly how much, and if it's run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, around Shuttlewood or anywhere around Derbyshire.
