# Shuttleworth: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? In that case put this page down for now, leave your ignition and engine off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a thorough flush, carried out just where your vehicle sits in Shuttleworth, is normally what it takes when caught before the engine runs.

The remainder of this page explains why it occurs and how to ensure it doesn't — useful if you are reading before it has happened.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Plenty of modern diesels in Peel Brow, as well as Shuttleworth, run on two fluids; the motor takes only the diesel.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust gas to clean it.

Every tank comes with a filler of its own.

Other vehicles put the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; plenty of others have the two side by side under one flap.

Diesel gets filled on every forecourt call-out, again and again.

Far less commonly, the AdBlue side is topped up — mostly from a bottle, by a person working out where it goes.

The mistake lives in that gap.

## Shuttleworth: how AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place

It is hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a warning from the vehicle, and running dry leads to limp mode — so a rushed top-up, perhaps before work off Church Road, or at The Duckworth Arms on the way home after work.

The old car's filler is where your hand reaches — but a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car keeps the fillers somewhere else. That's the second factor: an unfamiliar vehicle.

Lastly, the spout fits: diesel filler or AdBlue one, it goes in as easily, and after the pour starts, no part halts it.

Bank Lane or the middle of Shuttleworth: it is the same few seconds in both.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

A few seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a drive in Chatterton or a forecourt around Shuttleworth.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally is not. Read it rather than going by position.

- Look at the size: the smaller neck is, on plenty of motors, the AdBlue one.

- Lift the filler flap and check for a label — plenty of cars show what goes in which filler right there.

- The handbook says which it lives if the filler is not next to your diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Entwistle.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

Anywhere across Greater Manchester the light comes on, this is a routine for that day.

- Not in a rush on the side of Lower Road, not on a slope, not with the motor running: park and switch off first.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and say the word "AdBlue" aloud while unscrewing it. It sounds daft. It works.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Before starting the car, close the cap and check again that your diesel cap was never came off.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you have already poured into the diesel side.

Never carry on to step five.

## Shuttleworth: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Brief order, then. First: your motor stays off.

The fuel pump runs on plenty of diesels as soon as your ignition goes on — and so keep it off.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is pulled from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.

Ask the staff to help push the vehicle clear of the pump if you're on a forecourt — the EG On the Move, the Esso or somewhere else.

On your own drive around Shuttleworth? So the vehicle stays put.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if your engine has already run.

On the M66, under a mile from Shuttleworth, that means the next junction.

Distance counts — a quick hop across Shuttleworth is a smaller job than heading under 15 miles to Salford — so say roughly how far it went.

## When our engineers get there around Shuttleworth, what occurs?

Our engineers come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Peel Brow School, close to Ramsbottom Fitness Centre or on your own drive.

The replies determine this work and the price, and so our engineers ask what got in, roughly how much, and if it has run.

During the call itself, you hear the price — ahead of dispatch.

Your system is then purged thoroughly, after your tank is emptied.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and eats at certain fuel-system metals, and none of that clears out by itself. That is why it matters more.

A test is at the end: before that, fresh diesel goes in, and the filter is flushed or changed if necessary.

We do not leave until it has been started and is running correctly.

With pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs in which your motor has not run take about half an hour after our engineers are there.

Nothing in advance; you settle up that day. Afterwards, a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer are handed to you for the insurer.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours while we are on the way.

## About Shuttleworth, for a moment

Shuttleworth is a small village in Greater Manchester, situated on the riverside at an elevation of 171 metres. Shuttleworth has a population of around 604 people and is characterized by predominantly terraced housing. Shuttleworth is located near several other small places, including Bank Lane, Stubbins, and Fletcher Bank, and is approximately 12 miles from the city of Salford. Shuttleworth sits in a scenic area, with the nearby river and surrounding countryside offering attractive views.

## Shuttleworth and Greater Manchester: AdBlue drains across the area

As a village, Shuttleworth has the same vans as nearby places — Stubbins, Fletcher Bank — all the way across BL postcodes and the surrounding area beyond.

Give a postcode beginning BL0 0, and our van gets there quickest.

The car stays put.

A driveway, a lay-by on the way to Top Mill Park, a side street close to St Pauls: our engineers drain the vehicle where it stands.

Tricky to pin down, like the back of St Philip? By a county line? Asking is better than guessing, and so ring.

## The short version for Shuttleworth drivers

Before you pour, read the cap.

If AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank all the same, leave the car off and ring 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel clears it where it waits, anywhere in Greater Manchester.
