# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Sid: Why It Happens

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? Then put this page down for now, keep your ignition and engine off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a thorough flush, carried out just where the car sits in Sid, is usually all it needs if caught before the motor runs.

If you're reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it does not.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

No single liquid but two: that's what plenty of modern diesels near Sid and Sidmouth run, with diesel for your engine.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into the exhaust stream and cleans it.

There is a filler on each tank.

Under one flap, side by side: that's the layout on many vehicles. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler sits under the bonnet or in the boot instead.

Diesel goes in on each filling station visit, again and again.

Someone who has to stop and think where it goes normally tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less regularly.

It's in that gap that the error lives.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Sid: how it occurs

Carelessness rarely explains it. Instead is three things lining up together.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it runs out completely, your vehicle goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Sid Lane before work, or in the car park at Volunteer Inn on the way home.

The old car's cap is where the hand reaches — yet a rental car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers somewhere else. That's a second thing: a new car.

Third, the spout fits: a diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it goes in just as readily, and once the tip starts, nothing stops it.

Land Part or the heart of Sid: it takes the same few seconds in both.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Look at these first, at a forecourt around Sid or a driveway out in Lower Woolbrook. A few seconds, no more.

- Check the cap rather than going by position: AdBlue ones are commonly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally are not.

- Look at the size: the smaller neck is, on many motors, the AdBlue one.

- A label inside your fuel flap often shows which fuel goes where, on plenty of cars. Check for it.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that is where the filler sits if it is not by your diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- Whoever had it before will know. Ask as you collect a rental or company car — from Feniton's car park, perhaps — not when the light appears.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across Devon that is.

- Not in a rush on the side of Sidgard Road, not on a slope, not with your engine running: park then switch off properly.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and speak the name "AdBlue" out loud as unscrewing it. It sounds silly. It does the trick.

- The diesel cap remains on. Where both sit under a flap, make sure it is shut before lifting the bottle.

- Slowly does it, through the bottle's own spout, till it's full or the bottle runs out.

- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

Discover at the second or third step that the bottle went into the diesel filler? That is where you stop.

Stage five stays out.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Sid?

Do not start the engine: that is where the short order of things begins.

Do not switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is pulled from — so don't top up with diesel to thin it.

Ask the attendants to help roll your car clear of the pump if you are on a forecourt — the the nearest petrol station, the East Budleigh Garage or somewhere else.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own driveway around Sid.

Already started? Pull over once it's sensible, then switch off.

Leave the M5 — under 15 miles out of Sid — at the next junction.

Distance matters — a short hop across Sid is a smaller job than heading under 15 miles towards Exeter — so say about how far it went.

## Sid: what takes place when our engineers arrive

We come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside Sidmouth Church of England (VA) Primary School, close to Sidmouth Amateur Dramatic Society or on your own driveway.

Our technicians ask what went in, about how much, and if it's run, because those replies decide the work and our price.

That price comes on the call, ahead of any van leaving.

Draining the tank comes next, followed by a full flush of the system.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and eats at certain fuel-system metals, and none of it washes away by itself. That is why it matters more.

The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

We don't go until it has been fired up and is running correctly.

If your engine has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

While we travel, take a look at your insurance documents; plenty include cover for misfuelling.

## About Sid, briefly

Sid is a suburban area located on the coast of Devon, sitting at an elevation of 24 metres and comprising predominantly detached housing. Sid is situated near several nearby places, including Land Part, Fortescue, and New Town, and is approximately 13 miles from the city of Exeter. ## AdBlue drains across Devon, Sid included

Fortescue and New Town are among the towns around Sid, a residential suburb, that the same teams cover, over EX postcodes.

Fastest of all: quote a EX10 9 postcode to the van.

The vehicle doesn't need to move.

A driveway, a lay-by on the way to The Byes, a side street close to Woolcombe Hall: our technicians drain the car where it sits.

If you're near a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe like the back of Byes Toll House, ring and ask instead of guessing.

## The short version for Sid drivers

Read the cap before you tip.

If AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank anyway, leave the car off and phone 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel empties it where it waits, anywhere in Devon.
