# How It Occurs and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Sinfin

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? In that case put this page down a moment, keep your ignition and motor off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

Around Sinfin, finding it before your engine runs usually means draining and a thorough flush on the spot.

If you're reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it does not.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Many newer diesels on the roads about Sinfin and Hillcross carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the engine.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into your exhaust stream and cleans it.

Different tanks, separate fillers.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is filled at the pump all the time.

The AdBlue side is topped up far less commonly, usually from a bottle, and normally by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

The mistake grows in that gap between them.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank takes place in Sinfin

Rarely is it carelessness: normally three things coincide.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it runs out completely, the vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Briar Lea Close before work, or in the car park outside The Grampian on the way home.

Then, your hand goes for the cap it would have used on the old vehicle — since a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the tip after it has started.

Sinfin Moor or the heart of Sinfin: it is the same few seconds in both.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you pour anything, on a driveway in Normanton or a forecourt in Sinfin.

- Position misleads; the cap does not. AdBlue ones are often blue or bear the name "AdBlue" — diesel ones usually do not.

- On plenty of cars, size tells: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- Lift the filler flap and check for a label — many motors mark what belongs in which filler right there.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that is where the filler sits if it is not by your diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park outside Peartree, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

The day the light goes on, anywhere in Derbyshire, use this routine.

- Turn off once parked — level ground, motor stopped, and never rushed beside Lynwood Road at the roadside.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.

- The diesel cap stays on. Where the two share a flap, confirm it is shut before the bottle comes up.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Before starting the car, close the cap and look again that your diesel cap never opened off.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Do not go on to stage five.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, in Sinfin?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start the engine.

Leave the ignition off too, since on many diesels switching it on by itself starts your pump.

Thinning it with more diesel won't work, because AdBlue settles to the base rather than blending — and that's where the fuel is drawn from.

At a forecourt — Texaco, Asda or any other — the attendants will normally help roll the vehicle clear, when you ask.

Your own drive around Sinfin is the place it should stay.

If the engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

Leave the M1 — under 10 miles out of Sinfin — at the next exit.

A short hop across Sinfin is a smaller job than a run towards Derby, under 3 miles away, so tell us about how far it went.

## Sinfin: what takes place when our engineers arrive

Wherever the car came to rest, whether by Cottons Farm Primary Academy, beside Saint Stephens Parish Church or at home, our van comes to it.

What liquid got in, the amount, and if it ran: our technicians ask because the replies decide both work and quote.

No one heads out before you've had the quote by phone.

Then the tank is emptied and the system cleaned thoroughly.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own — which is why that counts more with AdBlue than with petrol.

A test is last: before that, clean diesel is added, and the fuel filter is flushed or replaced as needed.

Before leaving, our engineers fire it up and confirm that it's running properly.

Unrun vehicles usually mean a half-hour job after arrival. The equipment is fine on a busy filling station, and hushed enough for a driveway late at night.

The insurer will ask for an engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and both are yours once the job is done. Payment is on the day, with no deposit.

It is worth checking your insurance as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover is included with many policies.

The car stays put.

A driveway, a lay-by on the way to Rocket Park, a side street close to Frenzy Drama: we drain the vehicle where it is.

Guessing won't help behind Holy Spirit, on a boundary, or anywhere awkward to pin down; phone and check.
