# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Skipsea? Don't Start It

If AdBlue has gone into the diesel tank, keep your motor off and leave the ignition off.

Water with urea dissolved in it: that is AdBlue.

Being water-based, it will not ignite and won't blend with diesel; trouble only comes when the pump starts pulling it.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Skipsea, is normally all AdBlue in a diesel tank needs — if it is caught before the engine has run.

Call 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Skipsea: the first few minutes

Things to do:

- Keys out — that way no one can switch anything on.

- Put your hazards on if you are anywhere near moving traffic.

- So you can give us which fluid it was and roughly how much, save the receipt or the empty bottle.

- Our van finds you quickest with a postcode starting YO25 8, or just the name of a street close by, so phone from the spot.

Never:

- Moving your vehicle even a few yards is no reason to fire up the motor.

- Plenty of diesels run their fuel pump the instant the ignition comes on, and so keep the vehicle off.

- Do not top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue does not dilute in diesel; it separates out.

- Even a short way along Back Street is too far to drive the car.

- By the road, don't try emptying it on your own.

The attendants working at any Skipsea forecourt — the Thrust among them — will usually lend a hand pushing it clear if you ask.

Parked on your own driveway? Then it stays exactly as it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not the motor.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to fresh it.

Neither side suits the other: urea does not belong in a pump, and an injection pump can't deal with urea.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves really differently from fuel. It does not mix in.

It sinks, because it's heavier than diesel, and pools down where the pickup takes its fuel from.

Easiest of all: one that got AdBlue in Ulrome overnight and hasn't turned since. The liquid sits at the foot of the tank, untouched — though it would be first through if your engine runs, before any diesel at all.

Two kinds of damage follow from there.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps running on the components it hits for as long as it stays there.

If the AdBlue has reached the pipework, leaving it overnight around Skipsea makes things worse. Inside that tank only, waiting costs nothing.

Diesel lubricates the high-pressure pump and each injector as it passes; water offers no lubrication, and that is a second form of harm.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel regularly the bigger fault?

A fault of thin fuel is what you get after fuelling a diesel with petrol at the another forecourt nearby.

Mixed through the diesel and sitting still, it is no threat for now; using the motor is the damage.

AdBlue in a diesel is another matter: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all.

It can't simply be run through, because it doesn't burn.

It does not stay mixed, and so it can't be weakened. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your motor "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether the vehicle is in Upton or the middle of Skipsea.

With AdBlue, the good news is no different from petrol.

Wherever across East Riding of Yorkshire your vehicle has stopped, an unrun engine leaves the AdBlue yet in the tank: the simplest part of any fuel system to empty.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Skipsea?

It is not deliberate. Many cars keep the AdBlue inlet beside the diesel inlet, occasionally under one flap, and mixing them up is simple in poor light.

Usually it's never the filling station: someone buys a bottle driving home and tips it in outside the house.

It tends to take place in a couple of familiar ways.

Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside Skipsea Primary School the refill is hurried.

Near Beeford Road, a driver tips a bottle in at home in the evening.

Otherwise, after dark by Board Inn, the vehicle gets refilled by someone opening that flap for the first time.

It crops up the most in a rental, a brand-new car, a company car, or the other motor in a family with both fuels — the cars people use least.

Leave it off: that's the first response to the same mistake, wherever in Skipsea or the rest of East Riding of Yorkshire you happen to be.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Skipsea, and your engine started?

The AdBlue has left the tank, then.

With any running time, it goes on to the high-pressure pump and each injector, having passed through your filter and pipework.

Maybe coming back from The Green, or part way across Skipsea, the motor might go rough, smoke, drop power, flash your dash or cut out.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart the vehicle to check.

Each start pulls more of that through.

On the M62, under 25 miles from Skipsea, the next junction is where to leave, and somewhere safe is where to stop — not carrying on.

How far it went matters. A few hundred yards across Skipsea to the car park by Skipsea Methodist Church is a very different job from a run towards Kingston upon Hull, under 25 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the fuel system with every mile.

Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

There is more to flush once the engine has been run, and our engineers do all of it where the vehicle has ended up.

Very rarely does it leave long-term damage when it is caught early.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around Skipsea?

The vehicle remains where it is, whether that is a road beside Skipsea Village Hall, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt in Skipsea, and the van comes to it.

The job rests on three answers, which we ask for before all else — what got in, the quantity, and whether your motor has turned over.

On the spot, your tank is then emptied, and both the contaminated diesel and the urea come out as one.

Residue from AdBlue won't wash out by itself, so the fuel system gets a full flush, which counts far more with urea than with petrol.

Testing your car comes at the end, once clean diesel goes in and the fuel filter gets flushed or, where needed, swapped.

If the motor hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once our engineers arrive.

Explosion-proof pumps mean a live forecourt sensible to work on, and they run quiet enough not to disturb the street at night.

New diesel goes in to bleed the fuel system, and that's the final step.

Then our engineers start it and you set off, whether from a parking bay by Nafferton or a drive around Skipsea.

Our engineers check it runs smoothly on new diesel before we leave.

As the job is done in its entirety where your car is, a garage never comes into it.

The insurer will want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — both yours once this job is done.

Skipsea is a small coastal village in the East Riding of Yorkshire, situated near the North Sea at an elevation of around 8 metres. Skipsea lies approximately 16.7 miles east of Kingston upon Hull and is surrounded by nearby places such as Skipsea Brough and Dringhoe. Skipsea has a population of around 679 people, predominantly living in semi-detached housing. Skipsea is located about 170.7 miles north of London, in the Yorkshire and the Humber region.

## AdBlue drains in Skipsea and across East Riding of Yorkshire

Over the YO postcode area, the vans taking AdBlue jobs around Skipsea reach most of East Riding of Yorkshire as well, Skipsea Brough, Dringhoe and West End included.

Guessing won't help by a border or somewhere hard to pin down; phone and check.

Skipsea is a coastal village, and a call-out drain suits it: whether the car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, we drain it where it stands, so it never needs to be moved to us.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Skipsea?

Since the jobs vary, a flat figure wouldn't be fair.

The cost changes first with how long, if at all, your engine has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that went in. After that it rests on where your car is and whether our van can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight gap behind All Saints' Church.

Before a figure, never afterwards, each call from Skipsea opens with three questions: the fuel, the amount, and if the engine ran.

Once those are known, a range turns into one fixed figure.

You get that quote on the phone, before anybody heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.

## Skipsea: still beside the vehicle?

Not touching your car is, then, the best thing open to you.

Motor off, keys out, ignition off.

Ring 0333 366 0103 then tell us it is AdBlue, roughly how much, and whether it has run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, around Skipsea or anywhere across East Riding of Yorkshire.
