# How It Happens and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Skipton

Keep your engine and ignition off then call 0333 366 0103 now — the rest can wait when AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

Caught before the engine runs, it's usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Skipton.

If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it doesn't.

## AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

Plenty of newer diesels on the roads about Skipton and Rockwood carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your engine.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Separate tanks, different fillers.

On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel goes in on each forecourt call-out, again and again.

Far less commonly, the AdBlue side gets filled — mostly from a bottle, by a person thinking about where it goes.

It is in the gap that the slip lives.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs around Skipton

Carelessness rarely explains it. Instead is three things lining up at once.

On a driveway off A6131 before work, or in the car park at The Woolly Sheep Inn on the way home: that is where the hurried top-up happens. Why the rush? As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it's gone, limp mode kicks in.

Next, your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old vehicle — since a rental car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not.

Third, the spout fits: a diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it goes in just as readily, and once the pour starts, no part stops it.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Skipton or out in New Town.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Whether a Skipton forecourt or a driveway over in Burnside, spend a couple of seconds on these before any is poured in.

- Colour and lettering: an AdBlue cap is often blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally doesn't. Go by the cap, not its position.

- On plenty of vehicles, the size tells: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- Open the filler flap and look for a label — many motors show what belongs in each inlet just there.

- Cannot find it beside the diesel filler? Then look beneath the bonnet or inside your boot — the owner's manual will say where.

- The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park at the nearest station, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

Anywhere across North Yorkshire the light comes on, here is a routine for the day.

- Switch off after you park — level ground, engine off, and never rushed beside Keighley Road at the roadside.

- Silly as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew the cap works — after you've located your filler and read the cap.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Slowly is best, through the bottle's own spout, until it's full or the bottle runs out.

- Only after that, start the vehicle: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Spot at step two or three that it has already gone into the diesel side? So stop just there.

Stage five is out.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around Skipton?

Do not start your motor: that is how the short order of things begins.

On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so do not switch the vehicle on.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is pulled from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.

Ask the attendants to help roll the vehicle clear of the pump if you're on a forecourt — the Barge Fuel Station, the Morrisons or anywhere else.

Your own driveway around Skipton is where it stays.

Where your engine has run already, stop somewhere safe and turn the car off.

Skipton sits under 15 miles from the M65; on it, use the next exit.

Distance matters — a quick hop across Skipton is a smaller job than heading under 25 miles towards Bradford — so say about how far it went.

## What takes place when our technicians get there around Skipton

Anywhere your car came to rest, whether by Skipton, Water Street Community Primary School, near Boyes or at home, our van comes to it.

What liquid got in, the quantity, and if it ran: our technicians ask because the answers set the work and quote.

The quote comes over the phone, before any van leaves.

The system is then rinsed thoroughly, after your tank is cleared.

More than with petrol, it counts here: crystals build up, certain metals corrode, and nothing clears out unaided, no matter how long it sits.

Testing is last: before that, clean diesel goes in, and the fuel filter is flushed or replaced as needed.

We do not leave until it has been started and is running smoothly.

Unstarted cars mostly mean a half-hour job from arrival. The equipment is safe on a busy forecourt, and hushed enough for a driveway after dark.

The insurer usually wants an engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and you get both once the job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront.

Misfuelling cover is included in plenty of insurance policies — so make use of the wait to look at yours.
