# Skirbeck: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the engine and your ignition off and call 0333 366 0103.

Usually, if the engine hasn't run, it is drained and thoroughly purged where your vehicle is in Skirbeck.

If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it doesn't.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Diesel goes to your motor — yet plenty of modern diesels driven around Skirbeck and Skirbeck Quarter hold another fluid too.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it goes to the exhaust, where a spray treats the gas.

Each tank has its own filler.

Some cars keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; a lot more have the two side by side behind one flap.

Diesel gets filled at each forecourt visit, week in, week out.

The AdBlue side is fuelled far less often, normally from a bottle, and normally by a person who has to stop and think where it goes.

It is in the gap that the error happens.

## Skirbeck: how AdBlue in your diesel tank happens

It is rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

Haste comes from the warning. Your car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank sends it into limp mode — so the top-up gets done in a rush, before work on a driveway off Wing Drive, or on the way home in the car park outside Queen of Spades Public House.

Then the car is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and your hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Nothing halts the tip once it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Whether it happens in Boston or the middle of Skirbeck, it's the same few seconds.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so check them before you tip anything, on a driveway in Fishtoft or a forecourt around Skirbeck.

- Where it sits misleads; the cap doesn't. AdBlue ones are often blue or carry the word "AdBlue" — diesel ones usually do not.

- The size. On many cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Lift the flap and look for a label — many motors mark which goes in each inlet right there.

- Cannot see it beside your diesel filler? Then look beneath the bonnet or inside your boot — the handbook will say where.

- Picking up a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park outside Boston? Check with whoever drove it last before you set off, not once the light goes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

On the day the warning comes on — anywhere you are across Lincolnshire — a routine to use.

- Turn off once parked — flat ground, engine stopped, and never in a rush by Woodthorpe Avenue at the roadside.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it works.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the car on.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Before starting your car, close the cap and look again that the diesel cap never came off.

Find at the second or third stage that the bottle went into the diesel tank? That's where you stop.

Don't go on to stage five.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Skirbeck already?

Brief order, then. Top of it: your motor remains unstarted.

Leave the ignition off too, because on plenty of diesels switching it on by itself starts the pump.

Diluting it with more diesel won't work, since AdBlue settles to the base rather than blending — and that's where your fuel is pulled from.

If you are at a forecourt, whether it's the Gulf or the Texaco, ask the attendants to help roll your car away from the petrol pump.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own driveway around Skirbeck.

Already started? Stop once it is safe, then switch off.

On the A1(M), under 50 miles from Skirbeck, that means the next junction.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Lincoln, under 50 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Skirbeck.

## When we turn up around Skirbeck, what occurs?

Our engineers come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside St Nicholas CE Primary Academy, close to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints or on your own driveway.

Our engineers ask what was put in, roughly how much, and if it has run, since those answers determine this work and our quote.

That price is given over the phone, ahead of any van leaving.

Then the tank is drained and the system rinsed thoroughly.

Not like petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and attacks certain fuel-system metals, and none of it clears away unaided. That is why it matters more.

The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

Next our engineers fire it up and confirm it runs correctly before leaving.

Using pumps fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which the engine hasn't run take about half an hour once our technicians are there.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours while we are on the way.
