# Slack Side: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? Then set this page aside for now, keep the ignition and engine off, and call 0333 366 0103.

Usually, when your motor hasn't run, it's drained and thoroughly purged where the car sits in Slack Side.

Reading in advance? In that case what follows covers why it happens and how to prevent it happening at all.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

Many current diesels on the roads round Slack Side and Pickles Hill carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your engine.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Every tank has one filler of its own.

Plenty of vehicles have a single flap for both, whereas others put the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel gets filled at every filling station call-out, again and again.

Seldom filled, AdBlue normally goes in from a bottle, tipped by someone who must stop and think which filler it needs.

The mistake grows in that gap between the two.

## Slack Side: how AdBlue in the diesel tank takes place

It's rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

On a driveway off Thorncroft Road before work, or in the car park outside Wibsey Conservative Club heading home: that's where the hurried top-up happens. Why the rush? As AdBlue gets low the car warns you, and if it's gone, limp mode kicks in.

The old car's filler is where the hand reaches — yet a hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers somewhere else. That is the second thing: an unfamiliar vehicle.

A spout-topped bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, once started, keeps on.

It takes seconds, whether in Beldon Hill or bang in the centre of Slack Side.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Whether a Slack Side forecourt or a driveway over in Haycliffe Hill, spend a few seconds over these before anything is poured in.

- Position can mislead; the cap doesn't. AdBlue ones tend to be blue or bear the name "AdBlue" — diesel ones usually do not.

- Many motors fit AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- Look inside the fuel flap: plenty of motors have a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- The handbook says where it lives when the filler isn't next to your diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- Whoever had it before will know. Check when you collect a hire car or fleet car — at Low Moor's car park, say — rather than when the warning appears.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

When the light comes on, wherever in West Yorkshire, use this routine.

- Pull in on level, motor off, with time in hand — never rushing on the side of Enfield Walk.

- Silly as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew the cap does the trick — once you have found your filler and read it.

- The diesel cap stays on. Where both sit under a flap, confirm it is shut before lifting the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Shut the cap, then look once more — confirm your diesel filler stayed shut throughout. After that, start the car.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Never carry on to step five.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Slack Side?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start your motor.

On plenty of diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so don't switch the car on.

Don't top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is sucked from.

Ask the attendants to help roll the car clear of the pump if you are at a forecourt — the Texaco, the Tesco or anywhere else.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive around Slack Side.

If the engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

Leave the M606 — under 3 miles out of Slack Side — at the first exit.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Bradford, under 3 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Slack Side.

## Our arrival around Slack Side, and what takes place next

Our engineers come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Reevy Hill Primary School, near Faizan E Raza Masjid or on your own driveway.

Which fluid went in, the quantity, and if it ran: our engineers ask because the replies decide the work and quote.

That price comes over the phone, ahead of any van leaving.

After that: draining, then a thorough flush of the entire system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own — which is why that counts more here than with petrol.

The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

We don't leave until it has been fired up and is running properly.

If your motor has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

While we travel, have a look at your insurance documents; plenty include cover for misfuelling.
