# Slaemuir: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then leave your engine off — and your ignition as well.

In plain terms, AdBlue is simply urea in water.

It does not burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the damage it does begins when the fuel system pulls it in.

If your engine hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally drained and thoroughly cleaned where the car sits around Slaemuir.

Before you do anything else, phone 0333 366 0103.

## Your next steps straight away, Slaemuir: AdBlue in the diesel tank

Do these:

- Pocket the keys, and that stops someone switching the power on.

- If you are anywhere near moving traffic, put the hazard lights on.

- Which product, and roughly how much volume? Save the bottle or your receipt, and our technicians will know.

- Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting PA14 6, or the name of the nearest street, gets the van to you without a search.

Things not to do:

- No starting your motor — not briefly, not to shift your vehicle.

- Do not switch the ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- Pouring in extra diesel doesn't work: AdBlue settles out rather than thinning.

- Don't drive it anywhere, not even a short distance down Markinch Road.

- Draining that tank on your own beside the road is not worth trying.

The staff on duty at any Slaemuir filling station — the Tesco included — will normally help rolling it clear if you ask.

At your own drive, don't move it at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not your engine.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to fresh it.

Nothing in a fuel pump is designed for this fluid — and none of it was meant to travel through one.

It doesn't combine. Once it's poured into a tank of diesel, AdBlue behaves nothing like diesel.

It's heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of that tank, which is where the pickup sucks fuel from.

Simplest of all: one that got AdBlue in High Carnegie last night and has not been started since. The AdBlue waits at the foot of the tank, untouched — but it will be the first thing through once the engine runs, ahead of any diesel at all.

From there it causes two kinds of harm.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water evaporates, it strands urea that hardens in filter elements and tiny passages; meanwhile, since it attacks certain metals, each part it touches keeps suffering for as long as it remains in there.

Where the AdBlue is in the pipework, waiting overnight in Slaemuir leaves things worse. Inside that tank alone, time costs nothing.

Diesel lubricates the injection pump and each injector as it passes; water gives no lubrication, which is a separate form of damage.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it is frequently worse than petrol

Fill a diesel with petrol in error over at the Morrisons, and the problem is diluted fuel.

It mixes with the diesel, and while it is in your tank it does no harm; the damage comes from running the engine on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a problem of the wrong substance altogether.

It doesn't burn, so it cannot just be run through.

Crystals and corrosion stay through the next tankful, and AdBlue splits back out of your diesel, so thinning it won't help. Hence the flush matters so much, and turning the key "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than nearly any other slip — in Boglestone or the centre of Slaemuir alike.

With AdBlue, the good news is no separate from petrol.

Wherever in Inverclyde your vehicle has stopped, an unstarted engine leaves the AdBlue yet inside the tank: the simplest bit of a fuel system to empty.

## Slaemuir: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

After dark, two caps together — the AdBlue one and the diesel one, now and then behind one flap — may look the same. Nobody means it; plenty of layouts invite it.

Mostly it is not the forecourt: a driver buys a bottle driving home and pours it in at home.

It tends to take place in a few familiar ways.

Hurrying, outside the local primary school, after a warning light came on during the school run, a parent tops up the car.

After work, a bottle goes in on a driveway close to Teviot Road.

Else, after dark by the pub in the village, the vehicle gets topped up by a driver using that flap the first time.

The least familiar cars see it most — hire cars, brand-new cars, company cars, and the spare motor in a family with both fuel types.

Wherever in Inverclyde, Slaemuir as well, the mistake does not change, and nor does the first step: keep it switched off.

## Started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Slaemuir?

Then the AdBlue has left that tank.

Given any running time, it travels to the injection pump and every injector, having passed via the filter and pipework.

Expect rough running, exhaust smoke, falling power, lights on your dash, or a stall — returning from Woodhall Park, perhaps, or part way across Slaemuir.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart it to check.

Each start pulls more of it through.

Leave the M8, under 5 miles from Slaemuir, by the first junction and stop safely, rather than driving on.

Distance counts: each mile carries the AdBlue further in, so driving for Glasgow, under 25 miles away, makes a far bigger job than hopping across Slaemuir to the car park by Inverclyde Leisure Centre.

About how far it had come is worth telling us.

Once the motor has run, the flush includes more, and all of it is done where the vehicle has ended up.

Very seldom does it leave lasting damage if it's spotted quickly.

## Slaemuir: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel

A road beside The Church of St Mary the Virgin, a drive, a layby or a filling station: anywhere your vehicle has come to rest around Slaemuir, our engineers come to it.

Which fluid went in, roughly the quantity, plus whether the engine has turned over: our technicians check first, because those shape the job.

Right there, the tank is then emptied, and all of the contaminated diesel and the urea come out as one.

A full flush matters far more with AdBlue than after petrol, since residue will not clear out on its own.

Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

Engine not run? In that case count on about half an hour on site for most jobs.

Quiet enough for use outside a house at night, and safe on a busy forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

Fresh diesel goes in to prime the fuel system, and that is the last step.

Starting the car comes next, and then you head off from where the vehicle is parked, outside Woodhall or on a drive in Slaemuir.

Our technicians check it runs properly on fresh diesel before leaving.

Our technicians do it all wherever the car has stopped, and it never needs to go to a workshop.

Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come at the end.

Guessing won't help by a border or anywhere tricky to describe; phone and check.

A mobile service fits Slaemuir, a residential suburb: there's no need to bring the vehicle to us, because our engineers drain it there, in a driveway, a side street, a car park or a forecourt.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Slaemuir

Not one single figure could be fair, because every job is different.

Whether the engine has run, and for how long, comes first in what shifts the price. How much AdBlue went in comes next, and then the location of your car, since an open driveway is easier for a van to reach safely than a tight gap behind Wishing Tree.

That's why every call from Slaemuir starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what was put in, how much, and whether it's run.

Those replies turn a range into a straight quote.

Our price is quoted during the call, before anyone leaves; payment happens on the day, by card or by phone, and nothing upfront.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

## Beside the vehicle in Slaemuir, still?

Right now, the best thing to do with the car is to leave it.

Keys out, engine off, ignition off.

Call 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, roughly how much, plus if it ran are all we need. Petrol in Diesel takes over the remainder throughout Inverclyde, Slaemuir too.
