# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Sleights: Why It Happens and How to Avoid It

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? In that case set this page down for now, leave the ignition and motor off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

Usually, if your engine hasn't turned, it's drained and thoroughly purged where your vehicle is around Sleights.

If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it doesn't.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car

Many newer diesels on the roads around Sleights and Ugglebarnby carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the motor.

Your exhaust, not your engine, is where AdBlue ends up: dosed into the fumes to fresh them, from its own tank.

Different tanks, different fillers.

Under one flap, next to each other: that is the arrangement on a lot of cars. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler sits beneath the bonnet or in your boot instead.

Topping up your diesel side at the petrol pump happens all the time.

The AdBlue side is fuelled far less commonly, usually from a bottle, and normally by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

That gap is where the error lives.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank take place in Sleights?

It's hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, your vehicle goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Lowdale Lane before work, or in the car park at The Salmon Leap on the way home.

Then the vehicle is strange. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and your hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

A spout-topped bottle meets no obstacle at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, once begun, carries on.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Sleights or out in Iburndale.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Before you tip anything, whether on a driveway in Aislaby or a forecourt around Sleights, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Position misleads; the cap does not. AdBlue caps tend to be blue or carry the word "AdBlue" — diesel caps normally do not.

- Many motors give AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- Open the flap and look for a label — many motors show which belongs in each filler right there.

- Can't see it beside your diesel inlet? In that case look below the bonnet or in the boot — the owner's manual says which.

- Whoever had it before knows. Check as you pick up a hire car or fleet car — from the nearest station's car park, perhaps — rather than once the warning comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

For the day the warning comes on — wherever it is across North Yorkshire — a routine to follow.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Lowdale Court.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it works.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Only then, start your car: close the cap, check again, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Leave out stage five entirely.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Sleights?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start your engine.

The fuel pump runs on many diesels the moment your ignition goes on — so leave it off.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is drawn from — so don't top up with diesel to thin it.

Ask the attendants to help roll the car away from the petrol pump if you're at a forecourt — the Ruswarp Service Station, the Shell or anywhere else.

Your own drive in Sleights is the place it should stay.

When your motor has been run already, pull over somewhere safe then switch the vehicle off.

Sleights sits under 50 miles from the A1(M); there, take the first exit.

A short hop across Sleights is a smaller job than a run towards York, under 50 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## What happens when our technicians get there in Sleights

Our van reaches the vehicle wherever it has come to rest — your own drive, beside Gibson Cabinet Makers, or by Sleights Church of England Voluntary Controlled Primary School.

Those answers settle this work and the quote, so our engineers ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether it has run.

Nobody sets off until you have had the quote by phone.

Then your tank is cleared and the system rinsed thoroughly.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and neither clears out by itself. Hence it matters more.

Once the filter is cleaned — or replaced, where needed — fresh diesel is added, and finally your vehicle is tested.

Then we fire it up and check it runs correctly before we go.

Unrun cars mostly mean a half-hour visit from the moment we arrive. The kit is safe on a busy filling station, and quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

Your insurer will ask for an engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and both are yours once this job is done. Payment is on the day, with no money upfront.

It is worth looking at your policy as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover is included with many policies.

## AdBlue drains about Sleights, and North Yorkshire beyond

Being a village, Sleights shares its vans surrounding areas — Eskdaleside, Briggswath — right across YO postcodes and the wider area beyond.

Fastest of all: give a YO22 5 postcode for our van.

No need to move the car.

A driveway, a lay-by on the way to Front Wood, a side street close to Sleights Village Hall: our engineers drain the vehicle where it is.

If you are close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain like the back of Saint John the Evangelist, ring and ask rather than assuming.

## In short, for Sleights motorists

Pour nothing till you've read the cap.

AdBlue in the diesel tank after all? Leave it switched off and ring 0333 366 0103; Petrol in Diesel empties it where it stands, throughout North Yorkshire.
