# Slough: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

Stop here for a moment when the diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, then phone 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a thorough flush, done just where the vehicle stands in Slough, is usually what it needs if caught before the motor runs.

Reading before the event? In that case the rest explains why it happens and what to prevent it happening at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

Many current diesels on the roads round Slough and Upton carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your motor.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into your exhaust gas to clean it.

Each tank has one filler of its own.

Under one flap, side by side: that is the arrangement on many cars. On others, AdBlue's filler is under the bonnet or in the boot instead.

Diesel goes in at each forecourt visit, week in, week out.

Rarely filled, AdBlue usually goes in out of a bottle, tipped by a driver who must stop and think what filler to use.

That gap is where the slip lives.

## Slough: how AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place

Seldom is it carelessness: normally three things coincide.

On a drive off Church Street before work, or in the car park outside The Moon and Spoon on the way home: that's where the hurried top-up takes place. Why the rush? As AdBlue gets low the car tells you, and once it is empty, limp mode kicks in.

Next, your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old motor — since a hire car, a new car or a company car places the fillers where your last one did not.

No part halts the tip once it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Upton Park or the middle of Slough: it is the same few seconds in both.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

A few seconds is all the checks take — so check them before you pour anything, on a drive in Chalvey or a forecourt around Slough.

- Check the cap instead of going by where it sits: AdBlue ones are regularly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones usually aren't.

- The size. On plenty of motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Plenty of vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If the filler is not by your diesel cap, it's in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- The previous driver will know. Ask when you collect a rental or fleet car — from the nearest station's car park, perhaps — not once the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in Berkshire that is.

- Not in a rush on the side of Chapel Street, not on a slope, not with the engine running: park then switch off first.

- Silly as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew the cap does the trick — once you've located the filler and read the cap.

- The diesel cap remains on. Where both sit under a flap, confirm it's shut before lifting the bottle.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

Discover at the second or third step that the bottle went into the wrong tank? That's where you stop.

Do not go on to step five.

## Slough: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Brief list, then. Top of that: your motor stays off.

On many diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so don't switch the car on.

Topping up with diesel won't dilute it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the base of your tank, right where fuel is taken from.

The attendants at Tesco, Esso or any forecourt will normally help to push the vehicle away if you ask.

If you are on your own driveway around Slough, leave the car where it stands.

Already started? Stop when it is safe, then turn off.

The next junction is the place to leave when you are on the M4, under a mile from Slough.

A short hop across Slough is a smaller job than a run towards St Albans, under 25 miles away, so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Slough: what occurs when our engineers arrive

We come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside St Mary's Church of England Primary School, close to Queensmere or on your own driveway.

Those answers decide the work and our price, so our technicians ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether it has run.

During the phone call itself, you are told the price — ahead of dispatch.

Then that tank is emptied and your system flushed thoroughly.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and eats at certain fuel-system metals, and none of that clears away by itself. That is why it matters more.

A test comes last: before that, fresh diesel is added, and the fuel filter is cleaned or replaced if necessary.

We don't leave until it has been fired up and is running properly.

With pumps fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which your engine hasn't run take about half an hour once our engineers are there.

Nothing in advance; you settle up that day. Afterwards, the VAT invoice and a report from the engineer are handed to you for the insurer.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

Awkward to pin down, like the back of the curve? By a county line? Asking beats assuming, so ring.
