# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Smarts Green: Why It Happens and How to Avoid It

Keep the engine and ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103 now — the rest can wait if AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

Usually, when your motor has not run, it is emptied and thoroughly cleaned where your car sits around Smarts Green.

If you're reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Diesel goes to the engine — yet many newer diesels driven round Smarts Green and Little Sodbury End carry another fluid as well.

AdBlue's own tank holds it, and from there it goes to your exhaust, where spraying cleans the fumes.

Different tanks, separate fillers.

Many of vehicles have a single flap for the two, while others move the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel goes in at every filling station call-out, week in, week out.

Seldom filled, AdBlue usually goes in out of a bottle, tipped by a driver who has to stop and think which cap it needs.

That gap is where the slip lives.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank occur around Smarts Green?

Carelessness rarely causes it. Instead is three things lining up together.

On a driveway off Cesson Close before work, or in the car park at The Bell on the way home: that's where the rushed top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue runs low the vehicle warns you, and once it is empty, limp mode follows.

The old car's cap is where your hand goes — yet a rental car, a new motor or a company car keeps the fillers elsewhere. That's the second thing: a strange vehicle.

A spouted bottle meets no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. So the tip, once started, keeps on.

It's a few seconds, whether in Colts Green or right in the centre of Smarts Green.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so check them before you tip anything, on a drive in Dodington or a forecourt around Smarts Green.

- Position misleads; the cap doesn't. AdBlue caps are often blue or carry the name "AdBlue" — diesel caps usually don't.

- On plenty of motors, size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- A label inside your fuel flap often shows which fuel goes where, on many cars. Check for it.

- Can't find it next to your diesel inlet? Then check below the bonnet or in the boot — the owner's manual says where.

- Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park outside Yate? Check with the person who drove the vehicle last before you set off, rather than when the light goes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in Gloucestershire that is.

- Not in a rush on the side of St Johns Way, not on a slope, not with the engine running: park then switch off properly.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after finding the AdBlue filler and reading it. Silly, yes, but it works.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Stop when your tank is topped up or the bottle is empty; until then, pour gently using the own spout.

- Close the cap and check again. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you've already poured into the diesel side.

Leave out step five entirely.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, in Smarts Green?

Don't start your engine: that is where the short order of things starts.

The fuel pump starts on plenty of diesels as soon as your ignition goes on — and so keep it off.

Topping up with diesel will not thin it: rather than mixing, AdBlue sinks to the base of that tank, just where fuel is taken from.

Ask the staff to help roll the vehicle away from the pump if you're on a forecourt — the Gulf, the Esso or anywhere else.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive in Smarts Green.

Already run? Pull over once it's safe, then turn off.

Smarts Green lies under 3 miles from the M4; there, use the next exit.

A short hop across Smarts Green is a smaller job than a run towards Bath, under 15 miles away, so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Our arrival in Smarts Green, and what occurs next

The van reaches the vehicle anywhere it has come to rest — your own drive, near St Lawrence, or by St John's Mead Church of England Primary School.

Our engineers ask what went in, roughly how much, and if it's run, since those replies decide the work and our quote.

On the phone call itself, you hear the quote — ahead of anything else.

Then the tank is cleared and the system flushed thoroughly.

Much more than with petrol, it matters here: crystals form, certain metals corrode, and none of it washes out unaided, however long it is left.

The filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

Before leaving, our engineers start the car and make sure that it's running properly.

If your motor has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Paying is on the day, not upfront, and you receive the documents an insurer asks for: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

Before we get there, take a look at your policy; many include cover for misfuelling.
