# Snaresbrook: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? Then put this page down a moment, leave the ignition and motor off, then call 0333 366 0103.

In Snaresbrook, catching it before the engine turns usually leaves draining and a full flush on the spot.

The rest of this page explains why it occurs and how to ensure it doesn't — useful if you are reading ahead of time.

## AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

No single fluid but two: that's what plenty of newer diesels around Snaresbrook and Leytonstone run, with diesel feeding your engine.

AdBlue's own tank holds it, and from there it goes to your exhaust, where a spray cleans the fumes.

Each tank has its own filler.

Under one flap, next to each other: that's the arrangement on many vehicles. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler is beneath the bonnet or in your boot instead.

At the petrol pump, the diesel side is topped up all the time.

Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes normally fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less often.

The slip lives in that gap.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank happen around Snaresbrook?

It's seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it runs out completely, the vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off High Street before work, or in the car park outside Toby Carvery on the way home.

The old car's filler is where your hand goes — yet a hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers elsewhere. That is the second thing: a new vehicle.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the pour after it has started.

It takes a few seconds, be it out in Wanstead or bang in the centre of Snaresbrook.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so check them before you pour anything, on a driveway in Redbridge or a forecourt around Snaresbrook.

- Colour and marking: an AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally doesn't. Go by the cap, not its position.

- Many vehicles fit AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- Lift the filler flap and look for a label — plenty of cars mark which belongs in which inlet just there.

- The handbook. If the filler isn't by the diesel cap, it's in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Collecting a hire or company car, say at the car park at Wood Street? Check with whoever drove it last before you set off, rather than once the light goes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

The day the light comes on, wherever across Greater London, follow this routine.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Hollybush Hill.

- Silly as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap does the trick — once you have located your filler and read it.

- The two under one flap? Then make sure the cap on the diesel side is still closed before lifting the bottle.

- Gently does it, through the bottle's own spout, till it's full or the bottle runs out.

- Before you start your car, close the cap and check a second time that the diesel cap never came off.

Find at stage two or three that it has already gone into the diesel side? Then stop right there.

Stage five is out.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Snaresbrook?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start the engine.

Do not switch your ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Do not top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is pulled from.

The staff at JET, another forecourt nearby or another forecourt will usually lend a hand pushing your car away if asked.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own driveway in Snaresbrook.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the motor has already run.

Snaresbrook lies under a mile from the M11; there, use the next exit.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards London, under 10 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Snaresbrook.

## Snaresbrook: what happens when our engineers turn up

Anywhere your car has stopped, be it by Wanstead Church School, near Hermon Hill Methodist Church or on your own drive, our van travels to it.

Both the work and our price rest on three replies — what liquid, what amount, and whether it's run — so our technicians ask.

Nobody heads out until you have heard the quote over the phone.

After that: a drain, then a full flush of the entire system.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own.

The filter flushed or, if it must be, replaced; fresh diesel in; and then a check of the car.

Before we go, our technicians fire it up and make sure that it is running smoothly.

With pumps safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs where your motor hasn't run take about half an hour after our engineers arrive.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

Moving your car is not necessary.

Wherever it sits — beside The Wanstead Curtain, in a layby heading to Royal British Legion Memorial Gardens, at home — that's where it gets emptied.

Ring and ask instead of guessing if you are near a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe, like the back of Wanstead War Memorial.
